Topic: Anyone here a Vegetarian?

I have recently stopped eating meat due to my personal hatred for factory farming and my love for animals etc.. Its not a health reason, or to lose weight, I don't have a weight problem anyway. I'm not a hater of people who do eat meat however I really wish people would make the decision to buy local beef from family farms rather than the alternative. Not gonna go into preaching about government run farms, and PETA and the like, this isn't the place. Just wondering if there is anyone else here who is a vegetarian and what or why you decided to chose to be? -Seth

Re: Anyone here a Vegetarian?

To quote Jim Gaffigan, "I'm not a strict vegetarian...I eat beef and pork..."
This made me lmao when I first heard it and I can't even hear the word vegetarian without thinking of it.
I eat meat, but have cut back considerably on red meat.

Re: Anyone here a Vegetarian?

I enjoy meat in many forms, but we have a habit of eating more meatless meals per week than not. Just seems healthier. I have friends who practice vegetarianism, they seem to enjoy it.

Re: Anyone here a Vegetarian?

I'm not a "strict vegan" either, meat, meat, meat, I like meat. However, there are very few vegetables that I dislike. They are saying with reduced production of red meat that prices will soar 20 to 30% by this time next year. I have already started cutting down on beef, some nights son and I just have a big salad with maybe a little meat in it. So it's all about my wallet now, and will try to live with just pork, chicken and occasional fish.
You know they did a survey and found out that kids like chicken drumsticks the best. So scientists genetically engineered a four legged chicken for mass production. But they can't catch it. lol i'm sorry for that, carry on.

Re: Anyone here a Vegetarian?

Watching the documentary, "Food, Inc." is enough to turn you into a vegan, let alone a vegatarian...but then you've got to deal with all the genetically-modified crops that Monsanto is poisoning us (and the planet) with. Can't win for losing.

Re: Anyone here a Vegetarian?

Guess we'll have to grow our own Stu!

Not a vegetarian but eat a lot of fish and veggies.  Buy at local farmer's markets as much as possible.  Also able to buy fresh meat locally grown by individual farms but eat much less red meat and buy organic chicken.

Manufactured food is just such garbage imo and I have a tender tummy.

Re: Anyone here a Vegetarian?

I haven't made up my mind on fish, though I haven't had any in quite some time. Or eggs yet..though its easy to buy local eggs here where I live. Girl I used to date, her and I always bought our meat from the market here in York. Yeah Jane, I know Godfreys! We actually bought ground turkey, turkey bacon, turkey sausage etc and skipped the red meat altogether. I honestly don't have a problem with people who eat meat and also who go that route and buy their beef locally but I personally don't like the idea of an animal having to give their life for my plate of supper. Yeah Stu, I agree after seeing the films, and knowing what really goes on, its hard to even be a vegetarian! Like you're on a guilt trip every time you use butter or eat pancakes from a restaurant that are obviously made with dairy products from those places. I absolutely Love milk, and always buy non homogenized "cream line" milk from the market. (the kind you shake before drinking) Its expensive but its my milk strictly for drinking. I use Rutter's brand for my cereal and stuff. I will not buy store brand milk. Food: I'm sort of a picky eater, always have been. I don't like salads either! Has anyone tried the garden burgers or tofu burgers?

Like I said before, I don't want the thread to go off topic too much but I'm glad those who have chimed in thus far have cut back their meat consumption if for nothing more than for health reasons and try to buy local. I do agree meat isn't the healthiest choice. And I do encourage anyone I talk with to at least educate themselves on what really goes on at a factory farm. For too long I tried to not think about it but I have realized my ignorance isn't blissful in that department anymore. -Seth

What Rocket? Do you have a silage pit outside your house?!

Re: Anyone here a Vegetarian?

Bean burgers are very tasty. My wife makes them with black beans and uses hamburger seasoning. Throw some lettuce tOmatoe and onions on there. Yum!

Re: Anyone here a Vegetarian?

I would be interested in any tasty recipes you could share.  I am not there yet, but I do eat a lot less meat and want to incorporate more healthy foods into my diet.  I know in the summer I just love fresh fruit.  I am hooked on fresh pineapple instead of canned pineapple.  I can feel the difference.
I also try to get more organic foods into my diet.

So I would be very interested in anything anyone could share regarding more food substitutions for a healthier diet smile

Re: Anyone here a Vegetarian?

My name is LynB and I'm a vegetarian ...

After nearly 15 years of non-meat eating I still can't believe how little choice we get at restaurants where our choices are described as 'options'.  This annoys the hell out of me.  The reason for giving up meat was a very conscious one based on animal welfare but I'm pleased to see that the treatment of animals nowadays is much more regulated and humane.  But I couldn't go back now.

It's not all lentils and brown rice, but I probably eat more cheese than is good for me!

Re: Anyone here a Vegetarian?

I'm not a vegetarian - but i can go for months without eating meat, no problem!

I also think about the animal welfare aspect - as i am an animal lover.

When i was in my early teens, i was taken to an abattoir, and saw the whole process, how cows were slaughtered - an experience i will never forget. From that day, i eat very little red meat.

Re: Anyone here a Vegetarian?

Great thread!  This is the first time I've ever gone to the "other" section of the forums.  I didn't want to drag myself into politics on a forum that should be fun.  Anyways...

I was for 5 years, and since my wife is allergic to dairy, I didn't do tons of dairy either because we never had it around.  Over the last year or so I started eating some meat again, but I try to eat free range and high-quality meat when I do.  No fast food, no deli "meat" or anything like that.  I was in by far the best shape of my life when I was veggie, finished 10 marathons, and worked a whole lot of 80 hour weeks.  Over time, though, I thought it would be good for my body to start getting a little meat again.

I've been lucky that in Orlando there are quiet a few good veggie & vegan restaurants, and since my wife can't eat dairy we'd go to vegan places a LOT.

I actually started because my job required long hours and they'd cater dinner every night so people could work late without having to go out to eat dinner.  I just couldn't handle catered food for months on end, year-in and year-out, so I started requesting vegetarian dinners to get slightly more healthy.  Then when I started getting into it, and learning about how factory farming worked, I got a lot more dedicated and strict about it with myself.   It's nice to hear other folks that understand it's not whether an animal is killed for food, it's about how they're treated when they're alive.   Made me not want to eat most eggs and dairy, even though a lot of vegetarians do.

Anyways, I do eat meat probably 2-3 days a week now, and I feel pretty good physically.

Re: Anyone here a Vegetarian?

I don't like poor treatment of animals, and I don't like buying government stamped beef. I also don't like the carbon footprint of growing and delivering beef on a national scale.

But I fish and hunt deer, duck, grouse, pheasant, turkey, etc. In doing so, it's done as stealth an humanely as possible. I cut my own steaks, and grind my own burger, tan the leather, all other scraps go to the coyotes, and my family gets to eat for a year without having to buy beef.

Due to over-fishing in the oceans, I shy away from fish that isn't local.
