Topic: What is the advantage of pedal power units?

Was simply wondering what the pluses and minuses were opposed to just using a regular 9v power supply and a daisy chain cable?

Isolation.  A daisy chain will make all pedals draw from the same source at the same time, and can result in hum and other noise.

An isolated pedal power supply will essentially treat each pedal as if it is on it's own power source, negating any interference and hum.

They're not a cheap solution, but nice if you have LOTS of pedals on your board.

well not all pedal power units are created equal, and a lot of them do not have isolated outputs, but something like a Supacharger will and will also let you choose different voltages for pedals that run above 9V.

Yes - very true.  I was surprised that my (very expensive) T-Rex Fuel Tank was not isolated!!  I've got another model now that is.

macg1 is also correct in that some pedal power units let you run a combination of 9V and 12V pedals etc.  Some even let you chain two 9V outputs together to get 18V.  Pedals such as the OCD can run on anything from 9V to 18V and the different voltages can change the character of the pedal quite significantly.

NOTE: More voltage doesn't equal more crunch in most cases - quite the opposite actually.  I was amazed to find that more voltage to pedals usually meant a cleaner sound (more headroom)...

Re: What is the advantage of pedal power units?

Best advice I can give you is avoid a one spot.  For what it is its a great way to connect your pedals together quickly for say a last minute gig or if you've got a new pedal your trying out.  But if your going to play a gig especially with a single coil guitar and they've got neon lights or something else on that line to dirty the power then your 60 Cycle hum is going to kill your set.

Thank you for the advice guys!! Was considering taking the plunge for when I assemble my new rig!

Voodoo Labs Pedal Power Plus work great. As you all know even with quote "isolation" getting rid of 60 Hz hum is in itself an art form.
Can be caused by many things. But you all know that

Re: What is the advantage of pedal power units?

I looked around at the different options a few months ago when my PSU unit went pop.  I eventually thought I would try this unit and after many gigs, I have to say for the money it is excellent - well worth a try.

Or for my USA based friends, look here (pricing heaven?!) - http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm/60 … alers.html

Bear in mind that certain pedals allegedly work better with batteries - e.g. fuzz pedals - because of the voltage sag.  I sorted that issue out by using a virtual battery which plugs into a regular PSU and is a 'best of both worlds' solution - see here...

Re: What is the advantage of pedal power units?

It's one of those things like a big, heavy, solid music stand.  I didn't want to spend the money on it, but i use it every day and it was worth every penny in hindsight.  I bought one of the original Voodoo Labs pedal powers 10-ish years ago and it's still going strong.

Re: What is the advantage of pedal power units?

Gigrig is stunning for power supply. We tried Voodoo Labs 2 as a lot of folks recommend them but they falied many times and had got through 3 replacements. We gig a a lot so they are well travelled.
Cannot priase gig rig enough, totally bomb proof. We have one for tour never failed in nearly 2 years and one in  studio that has not been turned off for 12 months. The setup is superb, with cut to length cales and add odd distribution points.

Re: What is the advantage of pedal power units?

I thought this product looked neat as well. Sonny Landreth uses one too. When I do my second pedalboard here soon, I am considering this. My only hangup is the daisy chain plugs, I much prefer the single cable per pedal like with the voodoo labs, t-rex, etc..
