Topic: Most expensive thing you ever broke in a music store

I know this is a little off topic, but I was in guitar center the other day, playing guitars out of my price range (as usual). Then a though of horror hit me about what would happen if I accidently broke the guitar...like putting it up on the rack and dropping it. Fortunatley none of my thoughts came true, but has anybody ever a not-so-fortunate event occure?

Re: Most expensive thing you ever broke in a music store

Never happened, but I had the same sort of qualm a few years ago when I took my two sons (9 and 6 at the time) to Emerald City Music in Seattle.  I didn't realise the store was virtually ALL vintage guitars priced at tens of thousands of dollars each - all on floor stands that my sons were wandering in and out of... smile

Luckily my boys are VERY well behaved, and didn't so much as bump anything, but I was amazed at how cool the guys were in that store.  Not once did anyone raise an eyebrow and come over to ask me to leave or supervise the boys.  That fact alone has convinced me that if I win the lottery, I am going back to Emerald City Music to buy me a vintage guitar... or two!

Most expensive thing I broke in a guitar store? That would have to be a string...

Though I do have the same knightmare whenever I try and expensive guitar...and so always hand it back to a member of staff to put back on the rack!!

Re: Most expensive thing you ever broke in a music store

slightly o/t...

never done and never would but been tempted to break a few necks of music store staff before... - Had some awful experiences when trying to buy guitars for my son, - also some good ones, but you would think in this day and age staff would be hired with at least some people skills? In fairness once most of them see that he can play they have been okay but some have had a real abrasive or can't be bothered attitude when you first speak to them.

Interesting one was in a drum store when I was looking to buy a Roland kit, walking through the shop to the back where the digital stuff was my daughter pinged an acoustic cymbal with her hand, - this idiot jumped in her face and gave her lecture about these being musical instruments and not toys....  the lecture that appeared only to serve the idiot a some set of boost to his ego to be able to talk down to an 11 year old. We left and purchased elsewhere...

Yes, because bashing the piss out of cymbals with wooden sticks is so much more gentle on them.. What a tool bag. -S

I once blew up a tweed twin trying it out at full volume...  Its all fair game when you are spending your hard earned dosh...  I figure amps usually blow up when I get them home after sounding great in the store.. This was the universe correcting itself a bit...

You were allowed to try it at full volume - that's an improvement over most guitar stores I've been in... I even remember one guy sitting there controlling the amp - he got it set for what I'm sure was a great nu-Metal sound, but I was like "Okay, now could I have some mids back please"

i broke a £1400 limited run strat, a few years ago at a music store in london, my heart dropped as i saw the guitar plummet to the ground after not putting it on the stand correctly. It was the worst feeling ever, i ran away lol

Seriously, if Joe Bonamassa walks into your guitar shop, you let him do what ever he wants!!

Re: Most expensive thing you ever broke in a music store

Ok this goes way back early 70's, remember it was the seventies and I was in a rock band so my memory is a little fuzzy. I went into at that time a high end music store in Boston where people like Joe Perry, J Giels and the local high rollers would go. Anyway here I am looking for a new Marshall but of course I wanted to try it out. If you where not one of the elite you had to give them a deposit to try out equipment. So I hand over my $100 that I had got from the gig the night before and plugged in my 1967 white strat that I had at the time (wish I had it now$$$) running my Fuzz Face into it. Well when I got it loud enough to get to that sweet spot and it really sounding sweet along around the second verse of Robin Trowers "Bridge os Sighs" (I was a Trower head at that time) smoke started coming from the head. Man I got to tell you it looked really cool but needles to say my $100 bucks went up with the smoke also.
Cheers Ron

Re: Most expensive thing you ever broke in a music store

I saw a Telecaster "wiggle" it's way through a guitar hanger with a slippery furry cover over the hanger hooks... the hooks were a bit too wide, and nobody had played it (thank god) and it fell all by itself!

I'm VERY apprehensive to play telecasters at stores because of their slim headstock and guitar hangers.

Re: Most expensive thing you ever broke in a music store

I went into a store a few years ago and thought i would take a nice les paul custom off the hook.. only i didn't realise that the guitars had a security alarm cable attached to the headstocks. When i pulled it down it the alarm went off and two other customs went skyward and one ended up swinging from a tuning peg while the other landed safely balancing on a wall hook.
I was asked to leave after that. As i walked out the store with my store it wasn't until a couple of hours later that i realised my son had stolen a valve and shield and pocketed them oops
