Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

big_smile The Padres stole one from the Dodgers by a super rare double steal of home in the 9th. The first, tying run was scored by Cabrera from 3rd as he caught reliever Jansen with his back to the plate and scampered in. The winning run was scored by Venable from 2nd as Jansen's throw home airmailed Ellis at the plate and  Venable slid under the tag as the pitcher was late covering after the ball was chased down. Just when you think you've seen it all....

I wonder if that play will energize the team. They went on to win again today, taking a series in Chavez Ravine for the first time in ages. smile

Also helping the Giants take a 1.5 game lead into first place in the West.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

welcome back to the big leagues Ben Sheets, Mets could only manage 2 hits and 0 ER in 6 very solid innings. We need another pitcher to step up in the worst way. It was a great weekend sweep, payback for them doing the same to us to open the season. and now, come on down all ye Giants and prepare for the ass-whoopin that probably won't happen. smile If my calculations are correct we will face Zito, Cain, and Bumgarner. Should be a great series. GO BRAVES!

Poor marketing....not available in XXL. Not a problem for me, I'd never wear something that looks that close to a Dodger's road jersey.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

wow, we got our butts kicked vs SF and it ended the 7 game win streak. At 4-0 I went back to playing Tiger Woods PGA on PS3. But what really got me was waking up this morning to find out the Mets had blown leads in the 9th and 10th, only to give the Nats the win on a walkoff wild pitch. $^%&*&^%$##$%%^ *#$%^ damn Mets.... lol

I didn't give up Tres, after all it was Zito pitching, but he threw one of his masterpieces again last night. You never know for sure with him, but tonight Vogelsong is on the bump and he's all business. Posey really took it up a notch playin' @ home in front of family & friends.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Another great day for the Nats with our two nearest rivals both losing. big_smile There was a pretty bizarre climax in DC too - bottom of the ninth, 4-1 Nats, the closer's first pitch goes for a homer - he then strikes out the next two, another first pitch homer to make it 4-3, before he fans the next man.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

G Dawg, read an interesting article on the Nats regarding Stephen Strasburg. The Nats will probably be scrutinizing the available pitching as the trade deadline approaches since Strasburgs season will be ending at 160 innings, or around early Sept. those are Dr. Yocums orders to further rehab his arm from Tommy John surgery that he underwent. 2 teams expected to hold fire sales are the Phillies & Miami, both have a lot of high priced players with contracts ending and now's the time to get what they can for them. The deadline is always interesting and this year will be no exception. The biggest name being tossed around is Justin Upton of the Diamondbacks, he'd look really good in a SF uniform. The Giants are looking for a couple of bats, so the rumor mill has it.

The string stays alive as Volquez comes oh so close to a no hitter in San Diego. One hit shutout and the Pads are NOT in last place. Gotta look for the silver lining. Giving the Cubbies a run.

On the other hand, they may think that the pitching is strong and deep enough even without Strasburg, who certainly has been the main man.

Well Tres, this weekend could be crunch time for both teams, though I'm not sure how many of these games I'll actually be able to see.

First-place Nationals host second-place Braves for an important four-game series

On Friday, the Washington Nationals begin one of their most important series since baseball returned here, a four-game series against the Atlanta Braves. Ahead by 3 ½ games in the National League East standings, the Nationals could widen their lead to 7 ½ games with a sweep of the second-place Braves or fall out of the top spot by a half-game if they are swept. In other words, the stakes are clear and a great opportunity is before them.

The four-game series will feature two similar franchises, built on the farm system and reliant on pitching. The Nationals hold the edge over the Braves with their pitching, owning the best staff earned-run average in the majors (3.22 ERA) and have allowed the fewest walks and hits per inning (1.20 WHIP). Led by their bullpen, the Braves enter the series with a 3.97 team ERA and 1.31 WHIP.

Even though the Cards broke Ryan Dempster's scoreless streak at 33 innings, I still expect Dempster to be one of the top pitching "plums" before the deadline.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

The Giants are holding their own leading the West, but the buzz in the Bay Area is goin' on in Oakland. The A's just completed a 4 game sweep of the Yankees, who are mere mortals after all. Moneyball is live and well in the East Bay again. The A's lead the league in walk off wins and if the season ended today they'd be the 2nd wild card team in the AL. We'll see if they can keep it goin' and the other thing to keep an eye on is that looming trade deadline next Tue.

Rumor of Ryan Dempster being traded to the Braves but as yet unconfirmed.

With Brett Gardner out and Swisher day to day the Yanks went for some insurance. They'll probably get a little more outta Ichiro than they have with Dewayne Wise and Andruw Jones. That sweep by the A's might have rattled their supremist attitude a bit too.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Well I think it's safe to say the Philly's threw in the towel this morning to the delight of us Giants fans and those bums in LA. We got Hunter Pence for disgruntled Nate Schierholtz and 2 minor league pitching prospects. The Dodgers got Shane Victorino and last night picked up Brandon League from Seattle to compliment their acquisition of Hanley Ramirez last week, must be nice to have Yankee-type payroll scratch. They're also in the running to land Shane Dempster too. The Giants really need to shore up the bullpen especially after their collapse last night vs. the Mets. The clock shows about an hour & a half left to go!

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

the Braves got Maholm (P) and Reed Johnson from the cubbies in a trade, they got some minor leaguers but probably good talent there. We needed another pitcher badly and I think Maholm will fit in just fine if we just score him a few runs.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Well, the team with the "best record in baseball" today decided that they didn't need to do any business. big_smile

Chad Tracy returns from DL to the bench, while Corey Brown, whose first ever hit for the Nats last week was a home run, got sent to Syracuse. That's it. I imagine that they're all particularly looking forward to playing the Phillies tonight behind Strasburg. cool
