Topic: Class 5 Discontinued?
My local Marshall dealer just told me that the Class 5 was being disconstinued. I'm glad I bought one when I did. Wonder what is gonna replace it?

They need to make a Class 15 and a Class 30
5 was simply not enough.
Rumours seem unclear on this at the moment. Some state that a new version will be forthcoming. Some dealers say that they are still able to order while others are closing these out. I received one as a gift and have really enjoyed it. Great sounding little amp!
I really like the class 5 although the one I played lacked top end, had to crank the treble to get clarity out of it... Wonder if this is the case with all of them... Great with pedals though..
Any ideas or rumors on what a newer version may entail?
Stefan, I seem to be able to get a fair amount of top end out of them on their own. With a tube screamer in front also, but I find the bottom end to get muddy. My way of combating this is forgoing the attempt at trying to get a decent bottom end and go with a lower gain, vintage sound.
Any news on the rumor of these possibly replacing the Class 5?
That would be a cool little amp!
It says on the back of the amp "custom made" so who knows if it will be available for us mere mortals. Sucks if they discontinue the class 5. Good little amp, I only wish they would upgrade the combo to a 12" speaker.

This...so much this!
Just how loud are the Class 5 amps?
Just how loud are the Class 5 amps?
5 watts of tube power...They have that little 10" celestion in them... and they are loud. But when you bring it to band practice, you have trouble hearing yourself. Through a Marhshall 4x12, they sound nice and meaty with tube overdrive, but it's still not enough to cut through in band practice.
I have a 15 watt Fender blues jr and that is plenty loud for band practice. Just listening to the Class 5 alone with nothing else going on, you'd swear it would be loud enough too... but it's just not quite loud enough.

I will agree and disagree. All in all, those 5 watts are very loud. Believe me, I was skeptical too at first. Drums are loud regardless of who's playing them and I've had no trouble hearing myself over any drummer. Now onto the rest of the room: You're gonna need a mic to be heard in a live setting. You'll hear yourself but not everyone else will. I'm a FIRM believer in micing everything regardless of the room. The fact is this allows the overall sound to be mixed better and lets face it, the sound will be better coming out of a PA System rather than a couple transistor radios as amps tucked back on the stage. But anyway, I've played in a large room already and had absolutely no problem of hearing myself. Yes we were all coming through the PA but on stage I used an amp stand which brings it up about a foot and a half off the ground. You lose a tremendous amount of bottom end by doing this but you can't get much bottom out of those amps anyway. If you're doing an open mic, you'll be loud enough. I was even told not to come back once after I unleashed my class 5 on them. Here's a video when I played back in May. I'm not including this to plug my playing but rather to show the size of the room. All I had was a Class 5 and a Line6 M9 for my effects including the overdrive. I used an amp stand on stage and it was LOUD up there. Yes I was coming through the PA but I had no trouble hearing myself, and I was not coming through a monitor either. -S

Enjoyed that, and the sound and tone is great, still deciding on what amp to upgrade to and the class 5 is definitely on the radar.
Thanks Peter! I posted that video the other month over in the other artist section, thought you saw it then. Glad you liked it. -S

I did but was more interested this time in the sound of the class 5.
Get a VOXAC4 and be happy LOL
I think the Vox AC4 is a cute little amp but you'd have to mic that one as well and I think it gets kind of cheesy sounding when it was set at 1/4 watt.
