Re: where you from ?

Born in Bow, East London. When I get back to 'the Smoke' I find after a couple of hours I still drop into the old vernacular and have the accent, rhyming slang and all, even though there really are'nt too many cockney's about these days in Newham!

Home was East Ham which was E6, but we were the 'posh' side of the station which was actually 'rural' Manor Park E12. Famous sons?........lot of local lads made the grade playing pro-soccer for the Hammers and Orient. Too many to mention. Upton Park was about a 10 minute walk for me, so Wes Ham was always going to be my team.

Of course, Manor Park is the home of the Ruskin Arms where Iron Maiden had more often than not a residency in their early days. They were also regulars at the Cart & Horses and various other East End pubs. I've humped their gear many a time through '76 and '77. Funny thing, years later I found myself playing soccer for the same team as Steve Harris. He hadn't changed even though by then we was a millionaire svereal times over I would say. Quiet, unassuming, good player too.

Following marriage I committed a cardinal sin and moved south of Thames into Kent - 'The Garden of England', and then later after divorce a bit further into Kent, to Maidstone which had a castle, Gaol and everything!

10 years ago during a mid life crisis I jacked my (good) job and followed a woman to Germany. For the last 8 years I have built and run my own climbing park in Bad Bevensen, which is on the edge of the Lueneburger Heide region in NW Germany. It is about an hour by car from Hamburg.

http://www.bad-bevensen-tourismus.de/badbevensen.html

Bevensen is a quiet country town. It developed during the 80's tih a lot of Clinics and special rehab facilities. Hence the populace here is biased towards pensioners, although that is beginning to change a little now.

I guess it's 'Jewel in the crown' is the thermal baths. I must say it is refreshing on a winter's night to be outside in the pools in a 33 degree warm water.

I'm planning my next move now though. I don't want to be an English pensioner here!

Re: where you from ?

hansamike, you are my hero! I lived in Germany back in 03'-05' when I was in the Army. I ended up spending 15 months of that time in Iraq so I've been yearning to go back ever since I came home. Almost every day I tell myself to just get a ticket and go back but as usual, the way we think is what holds us all back from what we really want to do. I should just go for it when I get a little more money coming in later this year. Would love to stay there permanently. -S

Oh, and sadly there were no thermal baths in Baumholder!

Well, if you take the decision and buy that ticket, just let me know. Germany is a big place to see, for sure, but Hamburg/Lower Saxony is a beautiful region, if a little flat!

We'll roll out a Bonabud welcome for you!

Re: where you from ?

Workington in West Cumbria,Northern England for me. No, not Manchester-the proper North-just go as far up the M6 to Perith, turn left (west) and keep going.Right at the end of the A66 is Wuk-i-n.Once prdominately a steel and coal mining town, alas those industries are long gone.We have a decent old theatre in The Carnegie, where Wishbone Ash have played a few times, also Alex Harvey towards the end of his carreer and John Martyn,in '82-83 i seem to recall. Most venues for bigger gigs are 90 miles along the A69 in Newcastle,or up to Glasgow, down to Manchester, both about  two and a half hours away.Maryport and it's Blues Festival are just 6 miles up the coast, but generally,if you make it to us,you've already  driven through the Lake District and will want to go BACK there sharpish!  wink The fells and lakes-tho small compared to others around the world-ARE worth a few days to explore, quite stunning in any light, tho it WILL rain during a visit. What's the saying-"If you can't see the top of Skiddaw,it's raining-if you can,it's going to!"

Come on you Blades!

Re: where you from ?

Indy,

Agree on the sports fans, but you are going to have to enlighten me on the 3 meat breakfast? (something to do with scrapple...) Maybe I am a poor representative of Philly cuisine, I don't think I've had a cheesesteak in over 30 years.

Did you stay up late to watch the Phils beat the Dodgers last night? wink One has to enjoy the good times while they can...  I was born and raised west of Philadelphia in the suburbs. (Drexel Hill, Delaware County, Pennsylvania) The town has really declined, its depressing and I went to a public high school that is having really drastic cutbacks including all the Arts. Tina Fey, Todd Rundgren and Jim Croce went to my high school.

I now live in Southern New Jersey in a town originally known for their horse farms and a Quaker Meeting House. My house is built on a former farm that I think grew soybeans and one of the elementary schools my children went to was built on a former peach orchard. Its about 20 minutes to the border of Philly. I pay extra taxes to keep open space, otherwise every inch of former farmland would have a house on it. Some of the Philly athletes like living here among the horses and the corn fields.

thankfully Joe tours in the region on a regular basis

Beautiful horse farms just off 83, especially on the western side, heading into PA. Sometimes I take those routes when driving my truck. ..Have to get away from you "left laners" who never move!

You'd have a great time if one day you decide to layover.  Great sports town, many music venues, terrific food and plenty of pubs.  In fact there is an English pub opening two blocks from my home in about a month, can't wait for my first pint.   My wife is from North London so she's pretty pumped as well.  Cheers!

The three meat breakfast does include scrapple.  The two others are sausage & bacon or sometimes it jumps to four when you add Taylor Pork Roll.  30 years without a cheesesteak?  Oh the humanity!

I did stay up to watch the Phils win but I'm really waiting for Joe's Mets to implode sometime in late August as they usually do.  Drexel Hill, what a small world I now live in Havertown on Darby Road.  The majority of Philly pro athletes live in South Jersey because Jersey allows residents to deduct Philly wage taxes.  That being said South Jersey is a great place, are you close to Cowtown Rodeo?  A great place to visit on Saturday nights in the summer.

Re: where you from ?

Hi  Indy,

Let me know the name of the Havertown pub, sounds cool.  I'm over that way alot, I have brothers in Media and Ardmore, parents in Malvern and a college son living in Bryn Mawr.

I'm trying to remember if you are the Joe B. fan that works at Penn?

I thought Joe was a Yankees fan? The Nats are looking like the real deal this year, I had a serious crush on Jayson Werth when he was a Phillie!! I lost my lovin' feelin' real quick when he became a turncoat.  lol

Re: where you from ?

Angela,
It's a block east of the Lamplighter.  It use to be Killgallen's before the sales to the new owners, no name yet it's under construction.  It's suppose to be a big soccer bar…oops sorry the wife cried out "bloody Yanks it's football."  I'll send you a PM when they open.

Yep that's me, I do work for Penn Medicine.  Sadly I missed Joe's performances at Free at Noon at The World Cafe some years back.

Whether Yankees or Mets we love them both don't we?
