Topic: Hello everyone

Greetings! I started playing guitar back in 1970, but stopped in mid 80's to focus on other things. Now getting back into it in last few years. Really inspiring to hear guys like Joe Bonamassa and Eric Johnson play nowadays. Grew up in the golden years of rock and enjoy bands like Cream, Hendrix, Led Zep, etc. Started listening to Joe awhile back and love his tone on the Les Paul. He really takes me back to those great guitar sounds of my heroes back in the day.

Re: Hello everyone

Welcome aboard!  Joe fits in nicely with your classic favorites.  Is it wrong that I have nothing from Eric Johnson and only know Cliffs of Dover?

Re: Hello everyone

Welcome to the Forum, wiltel24!  Your story sounds a lot like mine (played some in the '70s, gave it up in the '80s when life got more complicated, just started playing again recently, now strictly as a hobby).  That's actually how Joe popped up on my radar:  When I started playing again, I started reading the guitar magazines again, and this guy Joe Bonamassa's name kept coming up.  He seemed to love all the music I had loved in my youth, so when an opportunity came along to check him out, I did.  And the rest, as they say...   wink

Not to me, it isn't.  Eric is just a couple of years younger than me, and was trying to get his career going in what was NOT a hospitable time for guitar-centric music.  I think his career is also a cautionary tale about getting involved with major record labels.  Aside from all that, though, I've always found his music a little chilly.  Never really got the sense that he was making music for others' enjoyment.  For me, at least, his stuff is easier to admire than it is to actually, you know, like.  YMMV, of course...   wink

Re: Hello everyone

Hi from me also, had to sell my guitar and amp in about 1978 after about 5 yrs playing as I was so skint at the time, finally took it up again about 3 years ago. Never lost the blues and classic rock music though. Funnily enough I too never had a thing going for EJ. Don't know why. Anyway welcome.

Come on the Blades (sorry Idolbone just had to borrow your line)

Re: Hello everyone

Thanks for the welcome to JB's site. Hope Joe makes to my neck of the woods someday soon. As far as Eric Johnson goes, he is a fabulous well-rounded musician/guitarist. Plays a great piano, and I have some recordings of him on acoustic guitar which are amazing, plus he does Hendrix songs really well too. He can also play some great country style picking guitar. Only shortcoming is his vocals, not as strong as they could be, perhaps. Joe is a much better singer and of course a great guitarist as well.
