Topic: Hello from an Aging Rocker
Hello,
I joined this forum after seeing JB in Plymouth last October. He was awesome!
I've loved guitars ever since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. First loves were the Shadows and Lonnie Donegan. As a kid I used to look at guitar catalogues hoping that one day I would have one and when I started work in 1972 I bought my first guitar, a Hofner Verithin in red with a Bigsby. At the time I was a Frank Zappa fan and like an idiot I sold it and bought a Columbus SG copy. A couple of years later I sold that and bought a CSL Les Paul Deluxe copy in Cherry sunburst. My amp was a Bird Eagle and I had a Jen Fuzz-Wah pedal. When I married in 1979 I sold everything!
In 1990 I bought an American Standard Fender Stratocaster and Peavey Backstage amp and haven't looked back since. I later bought an Epiphone Les Paul, and 2 Epiphone Sheratons (Natural and Vintage Sunburst). I also bought a Peavey Classic 30 amp with 112E external speaker.
About 18 months ago I decided to upgrade my guitar collection and have since bought (in chronological order) a Recording King Style-O resonator guitar, a MIJ bound Fender Telecaster Custom '62, a Yamaha FG730S acoustic, a Yamaha SA2200 semi-acoustic, a Gibson Firebird V (old style with banjo tuners), a Gibson Les Paul Studio '60s Tribute Gold Top with P-90s and most recently a Gibson Les Paul Traditional in Iced Tea Burst. I have no plans to buy any more!
I'm not a great fan of effects but I do have a couple of Boss Multi FX that I never use. I like a classic blues/rock sound which the Peavey is good for. I have a number of OD pedals that I use to push the amp of which my favourites are a Maxon OD-9 and a Boss BD-2 Blues Driver.
My musical taste is very much Blues and Blues Rock. I discovered JB about a year ago and immediately thought he was one of the best guitarists I have ever heard. I play largely for my own entertainment but having taken early retirement at the end of last year I would like to start playing with others. I have never played a guitar in public but hope that one day I will.
For my public appearances I play traditional Irish folk music (jigs, reels etc.) with a group of friends. I play a short scale tenor banjo (a Gold Tone) and also the Bodhran.
