Germany; not sure if it was just the fans or the team as well, but it really looked as if they had not bothered to look at Italy's game with England and had assumed their place in the final was a done deal... - maybe now the announcement about Loew coming to White Hart Lane will be made.... wink

Not sure if Loew is really ready for the English style of game yet. I watched his interviews afterwards and although the German media were critical of his body language in them I thought he explained himself well enough.

In my pre-match pick I had Gomez, but would have had Reus from the beginning alongside him. So I didn't see too much wrong with the selection as such. It should have been a good match up.

But yes, the failure to contain Pirla was their undoing. To be fair to Germany, they like to play their own game and not design a strategy around containing the other team. That sort of arrogance has served them well. But yesterday it didn't. Their normal fluidity wasn't there. I think if Germany had got the first goal it would have been a different game altogether albeit with the same result!

As it was Balotelli's 2 strikes rocked them completely and they never recovered. It got to the German fans too. Girls in tears after 36 minutes! Get a grip!

I hope Loew stays on, but the media (as ever) is beginning to question his ability, especially when he has the (supposedly) 'Golden Generation' of stars to pick from.

I think though one thing tends to get overlooked. Italy are far better than anybody thought, with real steel and a sense of purpose about them. It puts into at least some perspective England's efforts in containing them for 120 minutes.

I shall be hoping for an Italian win at any rate.

As for Loew at White Hart Lane...........I think he would be a fool. He has a good reputation overall. Why put it at risk there? There would be no support, no loyalty, no chance. I see it as lose/lose for him.

He can afford to wait. If Bayern start the season slowly Juup Heynkes will be gone and his place would be free.............

The Euro Football Final starts in under an hour ..... I'm pulling for The Bonamassa Clan and Italy to beat Spain's passing game by hopefully slicing through it, all with the Maestro Pirlo and Balotelli on form they can do it.

Agreed! Italy played like madmen trying to overcome and were shellacked as Italy's great defense was perforated like Swiss cheese. One of the greatest teams assembled ever IMO. A treat to watch! A game for the ages.

Re: The Football Topic

Spain worthy winners for sure. As Italy did with Germany, the first 2 goals from Spain shellshocked the Italians, the second of which was perfection. Xavi's pass being millimetre perfect.

Spain clearly opted for a muscular answer to the threat of Balotelli. 3 men surrounded him at most times with either Pique or Ramos invariably fouling him.

Whilst Spain were clearly the better team I thought Italy had plenty of chances and Casillas gave a good Dracula impression as the crosses came in, flapping at this and that. I thought Italy just needed that one goal. Unfortunately di Natale wasted 2 good opportunities and once they were reduced to 10 men there was no coming back.

Unusual to see an Italian team give the ball away so cheaply at times, but I guess that was as a result of Spains hard work off the ball too.

Age seems yet on their side and I can see this team lifting the world cup again. I personally don't like the dominant nature of their 'keep ball' football but I respect that their ability to do it stands them head and shoulders above everyone else just now.

Not long until the new National Football Museum opens in the centre of Manchester.

The previous museum at Preston North End was brilliant - compelling for all football fans. It was a sad day when it was announced PNE was loosing the museum. However, I have to admit, I am looking forward to seeing what Manchester offers.

Luís André de Pina Cabral e Villas-Boas joins Spurs..... discuss?

All a bit weird really, - sure he is full of potential, but what is Levy expecting to achieve? - we are a CL side if it were not for the politics of Chelsea being cup holders, - are we really a Premiership title contender? Not sure we are myself, - well not until WHL is redeveloped at least. Can't help but feel that Levy is trying to prove something to Chelsea but for me revenge should never be a motivator.

Very good news, imo

Yes, United have played their hand well, relying on the fact that RVP wanted to go and that Arsenal would need to settle it before the new season began.

Wenger will be bitterly disappointed to lose him to such a rival but will move on. For United it does give another experienced addition and option to their attack. Nevertheless, SAF's love affair with Dutch players doesn't always last long, but I expect they will be able to put up with each other for a couple of seasons.

have to agree, - think RVP has the wrong personality to work well with Fergie, but I could be wrong.

Re: The Football Topic

And awaaaay over here on the other side, the US MNT beat Mexico at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City 1-0. This is a very rare treat since the US had never beaten Mexico's team in 75 years on Mexican soil (there is no such thing as a "friendly" between them). Azteca is especially intimidating with fierce nationalistic crowds throwing heated coins, batteries and worse at visitors. Especially sweet after Mexico's Olympic triumph to deflate their fervor. smile

Re: The Football Topic

Any lover of the game needs to catch at least the highlights of tonight's first leg of the Spanish Super Cup. Barca scored two absolutely stunning goals in the second half and dominated far more than the final score would suggest. Iniesta, in particular, was a joy to behold - head and shoulders man of the match!

It certainly is. Ajax have been royally shafted by UEFA once again. This is the third season that Ajax have to play Real, and there were seven 'easier' teams to draw from pot 4 than Borussia, but due to all sorts of tv and money considerations, BD 'had to' go into this group. Ajax will be lucky to get one point. sad

Big Fat Sam and Messrs Gold and Sullivan have taken the biggest financial gamble in West Ham's history with the terms of Carroll's loan deal. I think that anything less than 20 goals from Carroll would be considered a poor return on what  is, in essence, a 5m quid gamble for a year's loan deal (1m to L'pool and almost 4m pounds in Carroll's 'salary'). I happen to think that he won't get near 20 goals, and West Ham by tradition are supposed to play football on the ground. Now, we're going to see endless crosses looking for the big lump in front of goal.

I am not happy. sad

Disagree George, on the Carroll thig anyway. At the Euros, I thought he did very well. In my book he deserved to start every time. I haven't seen him much, being DE domiciled so his on the floor touch was a big bonus. I saw him as more than a one trick pony certainly.

20 goals hangs a huge stone around his neck, particularly when his style of play brings other players into the frame and hopefully creates chances. In my view it is an unfair block to hang on him from day 1.

The level of the wages is unfortunate but a side issue to the barmy way football in the UK operates.

1. Liverpool should never have bought him for this money
2. I would question Rodgers judgement at allowing a player like this being allowed to leave virtually untried in a failing Liverpool side
3. With this move WH are at least signalling an attempt to stay in the league
4. West Ham play as much on the floor as anyone else. There are plenty of goals scored every week from 'up and unders'. No one complains when they go in, but Sam Allardyce is the only one being painted for it. It isn't right.

West ham's 'way' hasn't kept them in the division for any sustained length of time. I'm ready to try something else as the path to better things. Carroll deserves our support and not our pessimism, although at 4m per yearhe should give a toss.......................
