Re: The Football Topic

Turned out quite an enjoyable match. Great the Greeks equalised when they did and the the Germans shifted up a gear and with 3 goals in 15 minutes finished them off.

Full marks to Loew though Germany's trainer. Picking Reus, Schoerrle and Klose over Gomez, Poldi and Mueller was the decision of a confident manager, well aware of the strength in depth he has in the squad.

However the guy who I think has really shown quality, considering I never rated him previously is Ozil. He is all over the pitch. Tireless working the entire match. A lot talk about Schweinsteiger but for me Ozil is definately the engine room in Germans team in this competition.

They are looking very ominous. But well done the Greeks though, for getting this far and making a bit of a game of it, for at least a few minutes anyway.

Re: The Football Topic

That pretty much went as expected. The 1-1 was the highlight, I thought. Also thought that the Germans were very sloppy a lot of the time, there's still massive room for improvement. The Germany-Spain semi could be a classic.

I thought Angela was rather too animated when Die Mannschaft took the lead. wink

An entertaining match. The Greeks were game until the equalizer made the Germans turn up the wick. So much talent from so many directions, the Greeks wilted under the onslaught. Germany looks the juggernaut. 'Till Spain? All I see tomorrow is France heading home.

Re: The Football Topic

Our commentator said he was sure the ref gave a soft penalty because he couldn't contemplate another 30 minutes of that.

I honestly think that Spain has been playing at no more than maybe 70%. They've still got several gears to shift up and will dominate their next opponents too. I do think that Portugal will actually give them a bit of a game, unlike the bleu surrender monkeys who just laid down and let themselves be violated (in a football way, of course).

btw, what does Llorente have to do to get a game? Why does Del Bosque insist on lining up with six midfielders and no stiker?

lol
The French, to my eyes clearly the worst of the quarter finalists, came to heel like good puppies while their Spanish masters played fetch. I pray the Portuguese put up a fight and can get aggressive at attacking that mind numbing possession game.

Re: The Football Topic

Not just me that finds the European style of game boring. That's the trouble though the premier league way is exciting to watch but we don't win against it so boring it has to be then.. sad:

Re: The Football Topic

No offence intended to any of my English footy friends, but I'm sure you'd agree that it would have been an injustice of Chavski-like proportions if England had stolen this game on penalties. Italy should have killed the game off long ago, they had enough chances.

Pirlo was majestic! The Panenka penalty was the icing on the cake! cool Obviously, I enjoyed the irony of a West Ham reject scoring the deciding kick. big_smile

Re: The Football Topic

England went as far as they could, Italy totally run the 2nd half and all of extra time, Pirlo was supposed to be marked closely but instead with ease sprayed passes all over and run the match from the midfield like a general.
Italy were worthy winners and it just shows again that England are real shite at Penalties.

Now the best 4 teams have progressed to the semi's we can expect 2 cracking freeflowing football games and not cancel out each other matches.

Germany will attack attack Italy, that should be fun to watch
Spain have i feel a tough match against an ever improving Portugal, should be Death by Passing for a Spain victory but if Ronaldo turns up and plays again, he could be the difference

Whatever happens. it will be a classy final.

No offence to our English friends either, but they dodged so many bullets it was crazy. Playing to not lose is not the way to win. The penalty shootout nemesis reigns supreme. Now a dissipated Italy faces a well rested Germany.

Re: The Football Topic

Only one team turned up and the result should have been beyond doubt, however if England had won it would have been the worst travesty of justice possible. Germany must have been hoping for an England win for a nice easy semi final.

Re: The Football Topic

Well they do say that the best teams are built on a solid defence and that being the case then England should take some encouragement for the future. But Roy Hodgson should now see the scale of the job he has on his hands.

The back 5 were magnificent. Terry had an outstanding game as the 5 of them were subjected to an almost continual onslaught. That the Italians had 74% of the possession tells you all you need to know.

I was disappointed when I saw the team sheet as Roy persisted with a selection that would be more of the same - Milner and Young being shackled to an anonymous defensive shadowing role.

The opening exchanges were fun but then the pattern emerged.  England's game plan seem to be to protect a lead they didn't have. I made a bet with myself that he would exchange Milner and Welbeck at 60 minutes for Carroll and Walcott.

He did it at 59 minutes.

But these 2 should have been on from the start in order to maintain an attacking presence from the beginning. As Rick says, you don't win games in a knock out comptetiton by being so negative.

The german commentator reveled that when Gerrard went down with cramp in 73 minutes he had already run 9 kilometres! Most of that was foraging for the ball that would be too easily given away 15 seconds later........

That was our biggest failing last night (apart from the negative set up). We can't keep the ball for long enough. So many times we were in Italy's half of the field only for the ball to end up with Hart who then thumped it gratefully back to the Italians.

There were positives from this competition:

a) we got further than we thought
b) the back 5 is very solid (Johnson had his best game)
c) Carroll is definately worth persevering with
d) we know the limitations of Ashley Young and James Milner

To be honest, I'm not convinced of Rooney's worth at this level and never have been. But if he is the best we have then we need to find out how to get the best out of him. He tried very hard last night, to be fair with very little support. He looked more dangerous once Carroll got there.

The main task for Hodgson now is to find the players who can dominate the midfield. Gerrard needs help.

As for the Italians, we have unfortunately tired them for their encounter with Germany. They were thoroughly deserving winners last night, constantly attacking and I love their shoot on sight mentality. They will hopefully provide a stern test for Germany. I think Loew will have seen all he needs from last night.

I expect Gomez to start but I'm not sure about Mueller and Podolski. Hopefully he lets Reus have another chance. This is the game I am looking forward to. Spain's 'Total Domination' football doesn't do it for me.

Here's hoping for a Portugal / Germany final.

Re: The Football Topic

England got what they deserved - they went as far as they good given the team and the formation. I blame the idiots in England who started to put the flags on their cars last week wink - The flags were noticeably absent through the group stage but as soon as England get a glimmer of something the press and some of the fans think that we can take on the world.... Oh dear.

It would have an injustice if we would have gone through on penalties but you do have to ask why again are we sending up nervous players to take... Both Ashley's looked like they were going to miss before they took their run up. - However Ashley Cole had a great game, but Ashley Young looked off it all tournament, - that is where I do not get Roy Hodgson, why could he not see that? No use saying it was for experience, as we all know you can do more harm to long term confidence by leaving a player out to mess up. - Pirlo run that game and again I do not understand tactics to constantly allow him to do that, - as was said Gerrard ran his socks off. - And have to say after that performance I would not be surprised if Gerrard is thinking about retirement from International football so as to prolong his career at Liverpool.... I would not blame him.

Final comment, - I hope that the Italian who ended up with John Terry's shirt after the game is pleased,  there seemed to be some competition to take it though out the game!!! - Not in any way blaming the lack of penalty on our demise but when are the officials going to sort it out? - Okay if they cannot see it in the game why is their not a retrospective match ban after the game?

I'd like to see Spain play Germany with a proper striker, like Llorente, instead of with six midfielders. I have numerous reasons for liking Spain, and none at all for liking Portugal. A lot will depend if Pepe remembers that he's not playing Barca, his 'red rag to a bull' team. wink

Re: The Football Topic

My preferred final of Portugal against Germany was finished after last nights result, but I think the Italians are definately the team to take on Spain now in the final.

Italy were masterful tonight. Pirla, once again, demonsrating what a class act he is. 2 defensive lapses allowed Balotelli to score 2 excellent goals, the second of which demonstrated everything good about his game.

Germany had chances, but couldn't take them. I thought Loew was right to start with Gomez, but I would have had Reus on from the off. Doesn't matter. Germany just couldn't convert their opportunies, whilst the Italians were tremendous on and off the ball.

Fully deserved.

Re: The Football Topic

Maybe a bit of over coaching by Germany, but that is just supposition when confronted by the superb effort Italy produced. The perfect counterattack was well played and the defense and Buffon stood up to the best Germany could muster. The young German team will be better for this loss in the future as Italy still has thier number. I too think Italy can beat Spain. On to the finals!

Re: The Football Topic

I have to say that from where I was sitting over confidence in both semi's lost Portugal and Germany their respective places in the final.

Portugal was more a case of individual over confidence, - Ronaldo's personality failing let himself and his country down by trying to put himself in the role as hero by taking the 5th penalty.. It is unbelievable that one of the best place kickers in the game would do what he did, - not sure if he is unmanageable and it was his decision to go last but if he is not and the coach was in any way responsible for that then he should go.

Germany; not sure if it was just the fans or the team as well, but it really looked as if they had not bothered to look at Italy's game with England and had assumed their place in the final was a done deal... - maybe now the announcement about Loew coming to White Hart Lane will be made.... wink
