I can only imagine the post-mortem's going on in Holland after this rather dismal showing.
Feel a little bit sorry for Robben. He's got nothing to show for this season except a CL Final losers medal. Bayern were second everywhere and now the Dutch debacle.
In the game against Denmark, it seemed a matter of when and not if, but their finishing was abysmal. In fact, I've noted there is a real temptation on the part of many teams to over complicate in the final third. Maybe they try to emulate the intricate play of Spain but it isn't necessary.
You sit there sometimes saying "For Chrissakes why doesn't sometime attempt a shot?"
At least it is one aspect of Englands play currently that is encouraging. We probably don't have the skills to complicate it too much, so therefore the simpler "shoot on sight" has to be the right one for.
Am I alone in that, for the first time in years, I watched England in the Sweden game without throwing my hands up every five minutes. I rather like their competent approach. Yes, it all looks a little at sea when the pressure is on, but given the paucity of truly top class players in the side I found it quite encouraging. There is at least some honest endeavour going on and the new faces have provided a change. I hope Walcott gets the nod over Millner, but I would give Young another shot. I have the feeling he will come good.
There's been criticism of Terry but he has given stoic, if not, mobile performances. Ashley Cole is often unsung, but he really is a standout plyer for England. Always comfortable on the ball and robust and energetic off it.
Johnson remains my defensive worry. I just don't think he is up to the task. I never thought I would miss Gary Neville!
It won't happen I am sure, but I hope Croatia do Spain tonight. Its always fun when the pot gets shaken up.
