Topic: Classic Rock magazine spawns Blues spin-off

Mods - not sure where's the best place for this thread, so I'll leave placement to your discression.

This may be old news to those not living under a rock or who have spent the week-end sitting enjoying summer and reading the latest edition of Classic Rock from cover to cover.

One June 14th they are releasing a Blues oriented magazine to go with their Prog and AOR themed publications. As well as the customary cover mounted CD (probably UK only) issue 1 features interviews with Buddy Guy, Bonny Raitt, Joe B on the new album and Royal Southern Brotherhood. Looks like the remit is to cover the entire span and spectrum of recorded blues.

Re: Classic Rock magazine spawns Blues spin-off

Brack is correct, he had mentioned it earlier, but this is worth a thread of its own. Joe indirectly deserves a huge amount of credit for this happening. His own success has made Classic Rock magazine look far more at the blues, with features on many modern blues artists. They have also released CDs featuring many of the artists, albeit with a slant on the heavier rockier ones. I look forward to reading the magazine and hope it is broad in its coverage of the genre. Incidently the editor is the guy who wrote the linear notes for DITD.

Is true for me.I discovered Joe then sought out the unknown artists in hard rockin blues. My head is truly greatful that it was blown away but still intact.

Re: Classic Rock magazine spawns Blues spin-off

Very informative first issue with lots of gigs listed. And of course a Joe interview. And a bit from Kevin Shirley about working with Joe.

Re: Classic Rock magazine spawns Blues spin-off

I ordered a copy online on Sunday, fingers crossed it arrives today or tomorrow.

Re: Classic Rock magazine spawns Blues spin-off

Got my copy today - haven't read it yet, just leafed through - a good mix, and the Promo CD is equally good.

Re: Classic Rock magazine spawns Blues spin-off

An interesting review of BTTD which starts as follows:
"While his work ethic is the stuff of legend, it would be nice to see Joe step on the brake and get some more original material on his records. For all the piss and vinegar he brings  to the classic blues numbers (Robert Johnson's Stones in My Passway is particularly inspired), it's the quartet of self penned songs that make Driving Towards The Daylight such a throbbing slab of brilliance".

For the rest you'll have to read the magazine.

Alongside the interview with Joe, there are also interviews with Buddy Guy, Walter Trout, Royal Southern Brotherhood, Jack White and Danny Bryant. It will be interesting who they feature to keep it up, next issue out in August.

Re: Classic Rock magazine spawns Blues spin-off

Had a good read of my copy on Sunday afternoon while blasting the promo CD - which is excellent by the way.

Format is very similar to the parent magazine, so it's "user friendly", informative etc. As Duncan says, good interviews across the board as well as useful snapshots of newer bands; Federal Charm has caught my attention and Laurence Jones has gone up a notch in my book - fellow Cure fan... Could do with the organised Gig directory as in Classic Rock. Interesting though how it highlights an ongoing issue that Joe has about mainstream press exposure; it takes a British magazine to give him (and other Blues bands) not just column space, but pages: does that mean as in the 60s, we're leading the way again.....debate........

Only fly in the ointment - is it really worth the £2.50 more than the flagship publication just because it caters to a "specialist" genre? Sort that out Classic Rock guys and I'll be in the front of the queue come August 9th.

Just love how the mags keep making the point of telling us, the Promo CD is FREE! hmm

Re: Classic Rock magazine spawns Blues spin-off

For those of you in the US I picked up a copy today at Barnes & Noble, it had just arrived this week. I discovered last year when I was looking for the Guitarist Magazine that magazines from the UK are right at 5-6 weeks after I've read about it here. I had stopped in last Thursday and they did not have it and since it was the 1st issue my new found friend in periodicals didn't have any way to check if it was coming in.  He did however think I was in looking for the Classic Rock "The Real 77" issue that had a short interview with Joe on the last page he handed me that and then went to the back stock room and brought me Vintage Guitar August issue that had an interview in it smile I of course left with both! Now that's what I call great customer service cool I haven't had the chance to read them yet, that is my project for the weekend wink

Edited to add: the cd was included with the US copy and correct a typo!
