Joe played a really cool double-neck SG at the show in Portland last December.

EDS-1275 was that no the Hotel California Don Felder signature model?

Re: Why Joe show no love for SGs? :(

In the past I'd like to get a double red SG because of Jimmy Page. But nowadays I prefer a lot more antique white colour because of Joe (ok, Alex Lifeson is also very guilty LOL).

Re: Why Joe show no love for SGs? :(

I use a double SG aka ES-1275.... They are awesome... Im really not a fan of SGs in general... They are thin sounding to me..  You can disprove what I just said by listening to Derek Trucks, Frank Marino and Frank Zappa..  I just can't get on with them,.. Its the one guitar out of the fine line of Gibson products I don't own.. and please don't come back and say do you owe a Firebird x LOL...  No I don't own one of those either... so I guess its 2.....

Re: Why Joe show no love for SGs? :(

i think it really comes down to what instrument inspires you when you get your hands on it, i mean, if there was a 'perfect' guitar, everyone would be using the same one.

I Think the most important thing is what reaction the instrument gets out of you, because if you've always been a Les Paul-nut then you will be more inspired and play with more conviction when the you play a Les Paul, and therefore play and sound better. Likewise with me when i play an SG, i think i sound better on an SG because i have a bit of an emotional attachment to them (i was inspired to play guitar after seeing Jack Black play an SG in School of Rock when i was 13 years old).

So in summary, I could play a Les Paul through Joe Bonamassa's rig and record it, and record myself playing through my SG with my solidstate marshall (like i did in the video i posted on my first thread earlier this month), and id personally react more and get more out of the latter because of how i feel when i express myself through the model of instrument i feel i have a connection with, my intent when i play would come across more i believe.

Hope no-one misinterprets that as me thinking my gear is better or something, im just trying to convey the subjective individualism that comes across on a guitar as sensitive and tactile as an electric guitar. Everyone's different, and thats what makes it great smile (How cool is it to be a guitar player, right?)

If anyone got the idea of what im trying to put across there then hopefully you agree. smile

Re: Why Joe show no love for SGs? :(

I always wanted an SG since I started playing. Was one of my favorite looking guitars from the start. Recently about 2 years ago, I played one again and I don't wanna say I didn't like it but it had a different feel than I was used to. I then bought one a little later because lets face it, they're darn cool looking! I play it from time to time, and I do really like it for slide for some reason. Not much of a slide player AT ALL, though it still has a nice tone all around I think. I'd never sell it, but they definitely are different than a regular Les Paul which is good, otherwise there would be no point in even making the guitar. I don't really do any recording but I have the option of doing so and that is where you can really use it for its magic in achieving different tones. All in all, I like them and when I bring it out, people always comment on it despite the fact I might have 2 other beautiful Les Pauls and even a gorgeous PRS depending on my mood that night. They do turn heads from what I've noticed. -Seth

Absolutely right with you there.  In fact any association between a guitar and robot controls just turns me right off!

On SG's, I had a cherry copy as my first electric back in the 70's (can't remember the make).  For a cheap guitar it wasn't too bad actually and it got me going, so I remember it fondly.  Soon as I had enough money to trade up to a Les Paul copy (a Columbus - which was incredibly good) I did so, but I do wish I'd been able to keep these first two guitars that started my musical journey.  Since then, I've only played an SG once - a lovely vintage Gibson in a shop and was very tempted to buy it as it was a steal but backed off because like Joe, it's a guitar I've never felt entirely comfortable with.

Re: Why Joe show no love for SGs? :(

Let me just say I'm in love with my SG Standard!  I bought it back in 2001 my first gibson.  It was my best gibson as far as feel goes and maybe the second best by sound.  After having kids I sold a lot of my gear.  I had at one point 5 gibson guitars and a heard of Fender Strats.  When all was said and done I had 3 kids in under 3 years and was newly married, so guitars went to the back burner for sure.  When the SG was sold I did have enough sense to sale it to a friend of mine who's son was learning to play.  Now the that boy went off for college he needed money more then a Gibson SG.  Long story short after all those years of not playing it I knew in the back of my mind I wanted that guitar back again when I could afford it.  This was the year that it happened.  So my experience is the SG was the best playing fattest sounding light on its feet guitar I've ever owned.  I think at the heart of my playing I always enjoy single coil Strats and Telecaster the best, but when it comes to playing humbuckers my SG is my go to guitar, and now that I'm in a band again playing country music I play the SG all the time to have a different sonic foot print then the other guitarist who is sticking with an American Deluxe Telecaster.  He hits them from the top, I hit them with the bottom!  Works perfectly!
