although perhaps it should be UQ as in Queendom....? When it comes to football we are anything but 'united"...

perhaps the best half of football so far?.... shocking defence from England, - where's Rio.....? Ashley Young is not up to the pace yet... Roy you nearly lost your job, - Harry was getting the Umbro tracksuit on at 2-1 down.. Joe Jordan was working out how he could get out of having to wear the 3 lions...

JT needs to get hold of that defence and sort it out. Looking forward to seeing Roney back, - in place of Young?

It was a great half of football, I thought it was all over for England when they went behind. Well done to them though for fighting back to get the win, disappointing for a Scotsman though!!

Re: The Football Topic

I was wondering how after the a first half of completely competent football, where we looked solid and toatlly in control, we became completely incompetent.

Ashley Young was clearly not making an impression but neither was James Milner. My main worry is always Glen Johnson. He just doesn't look comfortable on the ball and is sleeping off it. There were a couple of good tackles but only after he had made the original mistake.

For Sweden's first goal he was sleeping and kept Mellberg onside after the free kick was blocked and the was the guilty party diverting the ball into his own net.

The second goal was deplorable defending and Joe Hart has some responsibility. The decision to stay on his line was clearly the wrong one.

Endland were rocking then but the spirit remained and they fought back for a deserved victory in the end. I'm glad for England and not sorry for Sweden. There were some brutal challenges out there. Svensson should have been red carded at one point. Also it's good to see the back of Imbrahomvich. He's a wrong choice for a captain. Sulky moody g**. He didn't play that badly but I find him an absolutely offensive, offensive player.

As the old saying goes 'It's a funny old game' and as Chris Kamara would say 'Unbelievable!'.

Who would have thought before kick off tonight that Russia would be going home and the Greeks would march on to the 1/4 finals.

Germany licks their chops at the prospect of a quarter final against Greece!

It should be an easy win for Germany! It's not that long ago that Greece won the competition though so you never know what can happen.

True. An outcome is never a sure thing. Ask Russia.

Re: The Football Topic

Yup, it absolutely was one of those 'funny old game' days. Who didn't expect Russia to go through? I'm kind of pleased for the Greeks though, they could do with a collective shot in the arm, and they'll be out in the next game anyway. It was one of those games where if the same two teams played another nine games, Russia would probably win all of them.

It was always going to be a toss up who the other qualifier from this group would be, but most smart people's money was on Poland. Shows what smart people know, huh? big_smile

A few deluded souls here are clutching at the straw of Holland beating Portugal by at least two goals, while Germany beat Denmark tomorrow evening. It ain't gonna happen. Holland always have horrible, usually dirty, games with Portugal, and they usually lose. Depending on what team the manager selects tomorrow, I would assess Holland's chances of pulling off a miracle win somewhere between 0 and maybe 15%.

Proper miracles are a rare commodity.

Re: The Football Topic

Holland is not going through according to my fanatic Portuguese friends here. ( A large expat community of commercial fishermen, mostly from the Azores) I expected the Czecs to advance. That is a perennially good team that plays with panache, resolve and great spirit. I give them a lot of respect in the tournament and wouldn't at all be surprised to see them in the semis.

Re: The Football Topic

What a great spirit of the Greek team!! A great victory just before the election today!! It looks like the Germans will meet them next - but you never know. For egoic reasons I rather would like another team to play against them because after the economic torturing by the German government as a German it would be impossible to travel to Greece if the Germans would kick them out of the competition.

haha Guenther, I hadn't thought of that aspect. Yes, I think Greece will be off the travel menu for many Germans after the next match (if you win).

Re: The Football Topic

Yes potentially a cracking game tonight Netherlands v Portugal ... Both need the win to make it through to The Quarter Finals, so attack mode is necessary, but probs be cautious, they are both have a wonderful passing style but never lived up to thate
Portugal will rely on Ronaldo to perform, will he ever at a big tournament, he acts so spoilt and is on some ego trip always looking at himself on the big screens, he may be the 2nd best player in the world on paper but dont perform anywhere near Messi ...

I want to see Holland go through, cos have always liked their style down the years, from The Cryuff years to Gullit/Van Basten team ... but as George said ... their manager is at fault .. play Huntelaar and Van Persie together with Van de Vaart starting they need the link up play from their superior midfield with Schneider

Germany surely will cruise through as group winners, this is their best Attacking team for decades/even ever

Re: The Football Topic

Shocking defense by Holland. Ronaldo looked like he came to play. Germany as well. That put my son in better spirits since he was in hospital after e surgery for a ruptured appendix. He convinced the nurses it was good therapy for a German and they wheeled in a tv. He said they came to check often and peeked in to watch the score. smile

Re: The Football Topic

Holland were on a hiding to nothing, - play negatively and they had no chance, so they had no choice but to leave out the holding midfield and take a gamble on out scoring Portugal, - which are probably the wrong team to try than with.... If the tactics would have been like this for Denmark then maybe they would have gone through, by playing it safe against Portugal with 3 points already in the bank... Hindsight is wonderful!

You had (well I did) to feel for Willems (?) left back? - Young kid put in at the deep end, without any cover in front. If he learns from it he will make an extremely good International.

Re: The Football Topic

Qualification system is quite unusual really. Has it always been so? I don't recall.

I mean Russia eliminated despite having a +2 GD to Greece's zero. Elimination being determined by the fact that Greece beat Russia in their head to head. I mean, Russia thrashed the Czechs, while Greece lost to them. Both drew with Poland so honours even there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not unhappy that the Russians have gone, but I'm surprised that GD is ignored in favour of the head to head result.

Why doesn't UEFA impose that system for the Champions League Group phase? Or do they? Maybe I am not as up on the rules as I used to be. Certainly the head to head aspect makes the competion more interesting. Germany could have gone out last night had they lost, again based on the head to head with Denmark. It kept the group interesting right up until the last game.
