Topic: Why Joe show no love for SGs? :(

Light-hearted wee topic, i thought id see what people had to say smile

As i've seen Joe with every other guitar imaginable (including baritone John Petrucci models and Steve Morse signatures) i just wondered if anyone has ever seen him with/or mention a good old Gibson SG of any kind? He's obviously an avid guitar collector and from the look of the centre page in the Black Rock CD booklet, he's not afraid to show us his gear wink

Of course im biased on this subject as i have 3 of the things, but ive always wondered why Joe seems to have had a complete indifference towards the instrument? I mean, if they're good enough for Eric Johnson (there's even videos of him playing Cliffs of Dover with a vintage SG)...

Its a widely established belief that lighter guitars sound better, and if you've ever tried a Gibson SG acoustically (unplugged) you'll hear how resonant they are and how much they sustain. Mabye they just get overshadowed by the Les Paul because of the Les Paul's pedigree and history, but just watch any youtube video of the two being compared in a demo/review, and you'll see the appeal that guys like Derek Trucks, Eric Johnson (occasionally), Angus Young, Eric Calpton (Cream-era), Frank Zappa, Johnny Winter, Duane Allman, and Tony Iommi have seen in them

Enough of me selling the things, im not on commission so i'll leave it there wink

But yea, anyone even care/notice this?

Re: Why Joe show no love for SGs? :(

Perhaps Joe doesn't like the neck dive on them...?!? lol

In the same vein, you could also ask why Joe doesn't play PRS?!  Or Ibanez?... etc.

Re: Why Joe show no love for SGs? :(

yea and you could say the same about EVERY guitar company imaginable, but i mentioned the SG in particular because its one of the more traditional models of guitar from the golden period of guitar manufacturing (early 60's onwards), and he has so many forms of Gibson guitars already (firebirds etc) i wondered why he hadnt got hold of one of the most famous Gibson models.

Re: Why Joe show no love for SGs? :(

It's a good question.  I would assume he has had one sometime in his past and found it uninspiring for some reason.  They leave me a bit cold for some reason.  Not sure why.

Oh, and you missed one of the best SG players of all time . . . Frank Marino.

Gibson 60th Anniversary 1959 Les Paul Reissue, Gibson LP Standard Faded CSB, Gibson Gary Moore LP Standard, Epi Joe Bonamassa GT LP, Epi Zakk Wylde LP, Dean Michael Schenker Flying V, Jackson Randy Rhoads V, ESP/LTD George Lynch Kamikaze, EVH Striped Series R/B/W, Fender/Squire John 5 Telecaster, Fender Joe Strummer Relic Telecaster

Goddammit how did i manage to forget Frank???? i love Mahogany Rush, another great ambassador for the SG smile

Yea, its not a big deal anyway, the sound is in the player not the guitar. Just he has so many guitars, i wondered if there's a wee SG in there...

Re: Why Joe show no love for SGs? :(

For me (an possibly joe) they lack depth and don't have the versatility of a Les Paul.... SG's bark..... That's all they do.... Not my favourite guitar anyway...

Re: Why Joe show no love for SGs? :(

Doesnt have to be better than a les paul, in the same way you could say one of his tele's isnt as good as his les pauls, not here to start a SG vs Les Paul thread, every player wants different things from their instrument of choice. And as far as versatility goes, any quality instrument will be as versatile as the musician channeling himself through it, Im 20 years old and take comfort in that belief smile

Just speculating as to whether Joe's been spotted with one before, would be cool to see...

Yes, Joe has played a SG live before. At the Dec 20th, 2011 in show Vancouver, Joe had a couple different guitars with hiim. If memory serves he played a SG on young Man Blues and one other song instead of the double neck.

If I was next in line for a solo after that, I'd just sit my guitar on the stand and mosey on toward the back of the stage..

He is ever using THIS kind of SG:

Unfortunatelly he did not played it in recent brazilian tour...

Re: Why Joe show no love for SGs? :(

Glad somebody mentioned the double-neck! It's become one of the most 'epic' guitar's in the set! Young Man Blues is one of the most exciting songs at Joe's show, and it wouldn't be the same without it!
