Topic: Most inspiring concert you've been to/seen.

What's the most inspiring concert you have been to or seen on Television or DVD etc?

For me it is not actually a Joe Bonamassa concert, although Royal Albert Hall will probably come as my second.

Mine is the Cream Reunion Concert in 2005.

It would be unbelievable to think that now such a moment in your childhood could be such a pivotal moment on your life. However, when you're 7 years old, you don't think about it. The pivotal moment was when my Dad recorded the Cream Reunion concert. He sat me down one morning and said 'Hey, come and watch this'. I sat down to see three old people play some blues-Rock, well at least that's what I thought at the time. Until then, I had not found a type of music I really liked, but Cream certainly kicked it off. Without Cream I wouldn't have picked up the guitar and probably not discovered Joe Bonamamssa.

It's funny how people see things differently, I was so disappointed with that concert, but found Clapton's recent tour with Steve Winwood as the best I have seen him play for years. Mine was probably seeing Led Zeppelin at Sheffield City Hall with up front and personal seats in 1970/1 not sure which. It literally blew me away. Or one of the five or six times I saw Free. Then there was Lynyrd Skynyrd, oh and of course JB. Sorry can't leave it down to just one.... cool

Inspirational has to be AC/DC in 1978 Hammersmith ODEON when I was 14 a few rows from the front, - close enough to be covered in Angus's sweat! To see an entertainer like Angus at that age was just amazing, - I had no concept prior to that of how much a person could put into a show and how by doing so he could control the responses from an audience. Prior to that I had mainly been to classical concerts, -don't knock it, I still love classical music and it is for a kid a brilliant foundation for understanding how many different instruments can play different parts and come together in one sound.

I understand your point about seeing a live show on a screen, but have to say that the experience of actually being at a live gig is a different league, - the smells, the feel of the bass in your chest and of course the 30 plus years of tinnitus that I have suffered since! wink

My YouTube channel with plenty of my Joe's videos dating from 2009 inc his first Hammersmith Odeon ones:

I know about the tinnitus myself. After Skynyrd's support band Saturday especially, far too loud compared to Skynyrd themselves. Always wake to a constant white noise in the background. Ah the delights of Rock....

Thread winner!!!

For me it was seeing Pink Floyd at the Forum in Montreal. It was their first tour without Roger and it was the 5th or 6th show of the tour. They started the show with "Echoes" which was only played during those first shows. When they played "Comforatably Numb", and the "flower" opened in front of that circular screen during Gilmour's solo, I swear I had an out-of-body experience. To this day I still get a shiver thinking about those sights and sounds.

Epic.

Re: Most inspiring concert you've been to/seen.

In terms of concerts I've actually been to, the best is probably Joe Bonamassa at the Shepherds Bush Empire in 2007. We got there early enough so we could stand in the front row. Joe came so close to me it was unbelievable. I then went home and tried to learn all his songs and licks.

5 years later and I'm still going, but I'm getting there.

Re: Most inspiring concert you've been to/seen.

Two concerts have rendered me speechless in my life - first time seeing SRV some time in the late 90s at the Milwaukee Auditorium (opening for Jeff Beck, 17th row) and Joe B. at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, WI in Spring 2011 (2nd row). For SRV we all just sat there w/ our mouths hanging open. We couldn't believe what we were witnessing. As for Joe, well, you know how it is! big_smile

LIVE MUSIC IS BEST

Re: Most inspiring concert you've been to/seen.

Tough one, there's been so many. Probably the single most inspirational moment was watching Joe, Eric & Kenny re-create ANDY LIVE right before my very eyes and ears in a small Seattle tavern, in front of maybe 20 or 30 people.

Other inspirational concerts (for quality of sound and performance) include Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, Tower of Power (repeatedly and consistently inspiring), Supertramp and Frank Zappa.

Re: Most inspiring concert you've been to/seen.

Tommy Emmanuel - Cambridge Corn Exchange

AND

Joe Bonamassa - Cambridge Corn Exchange (Was on the front row and met him beforehand)

Re: Most inspiring concert you've been to/seen.

I envy my dad, he saw quite a few people when he was living in the US for a while. He worked in a record store in Dallas.

In that period he saw:

ZZ Top
SRV
John Mooney

Later he saw at the Hammersmith Apollo in London:

Frank Zappa with Steve Vai

Re: Most inspiring concert you've been to/seen.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Live - twice in Seattle - 1966 and 1968. 'nuff said.

Nothin' but the Blues

Re: Most inspiring concert you've been to/seen.

Probably a close tie up between AC/DC at Adelaide Oval, Deep Purple at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, Cold Chisel at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre and Budgie at the Governer Hindmarsh Hotel.... All great shows in their own right.... still haven't seen Joe live yet!!!

As for DVD's it would have to be either Beacon Theatre or Rockpalast.... Probably Beacon!!

Re: Most inspiring concert you've been to/seen.

I've seen lots of the heavy hitters including Jimi in the spring of '70. One show that really stands out in my mind though was seeing Joe @ Jackson Rancheria in Sept./Oct.? of 2005. I had just seen Joe for the first time opening for BB King about 2 months earlier and only got a 45 min. dose. This show he headlined and I got the full on treatment from Joe, Eric, & Kenny. I wasn't familiar with all the songs in the setlist and asked the guy on my right a few questions which he had all the answers to and told me he'd send me a setlist by E-mail. My first encounter with a forum member, David I. Even though Joe admitted he was whacked on NyQuil and suffering from a miserable cold it didn't effect his playing in the least and the rest is history.

Whenever people ask me about favorite music videos Stop Making Sense/Talking Heads always pops into my head. I love the way it starts with David Byrne solo and builds with each song till it erupts into a pressure cooker of rockin' funk.

Re: Most inspiring concert you've been to/seen.

Boy oh boy.  This should be tough as I have had the privilege of seeing some great shows and legendary artists.  But the show I am most proud of was one my wife and I took our teenage kids too: Kenny Wayne Shepherd 10 Days Out Legends Tour.

Buddy Flett
Bryan Lee

Hah!  I get that feeling just watching it on the Pulse DVD (and laserdisc before that).  I doubt I would have survived it live and in person.  So cool for you!

Re: Most inspiring concert you've been to/seen.

Led Zeppelin O2
Pink Floyd Live8
Thin Lizzy w/ John Sykes a few times
Black Country Communion a few times

They are the gigs that made me really want to pick up the guitar as soon as I got home and work hard...and I did...and I do.
I have seen hundreds and hundreds and my only wish is that I had got to see Koss live...because even the youtubes and the bootlegs make me pick that guitar up straight away and really dig in...speed does not matter. Soul does.
