I'm bad! Just wanted to add a little drama. Unless Joe is watching this thread, he's never seen these pictures.

Re: What was your 1st good guitar

Late to the party but I love 1st guitar threads
My 1st good was a '79 heavy strat that my parents bought me in the fall of '80 for my upcoming HS graduation in '81
Im a horrible son as all I have left is the neck plate, neck pickup & tuning gears .....

But a couple years before that ,while on one of those family vacations that I didnt wanna be on , my dad bought me a bolt on ,plywood Japanese LP Custom Copy ,a MAGNUM . That guitar ended up in the possession of a jr high buddy for 20 years ,but I now take it n the road ...go figure . I was so ashamed of it back in '79 as my school friend all had "real" guitars
Of course now , I play it with great pride

I sort of regret that I was a little too young to be in on that 1st great wave of dept store guitars
By the time i came along ,it was all Japanese (good & bad )
But I was lucky enough to "get" the charm & function of all the Harmony & Kay guitars long before the association with the  Whites & Auerbachs  made the prices go thru the roof

I wrote a little article for the fretboard journal about such ,a couple years ago

Re: What was your 1st good guitar

I played my blind granddad's '51 Martin D28 for a few years, he showed me some chords for a few songs that my small hands could make. Cowboy and campfire songs.  Grandma sold it when he passed. I took up cello. I remember how pretty the dark wood was and how it sounded. It rang like a bell. smile
I'm a listener now.

Yeah, it has crossed my mind. It is probably worth a lot now but she needed the money.  I remember the man that bought it was thrilled and payed a lot more than it had cost originally. The sentiment would be worth a lot more and who knows, I might have ended up a player.

I had one, same all blonde bought in '74 and sold it for next to nothing. Be glad you didn't buy one, not such a great guitar imo. Pretty sure you would hate the neck.

Re: What was your 1st good guitar

too small, too thin, don't really remember because I never played that well. However, my friends with LP's, Strats and Firebirds hated it. One of them that played an LP was in a decent band, he picked it up and put it down after about 20 seconds, and never touched it again. I remember that there were only 2 positions on the varitone control, whatever it was called, that sounded good and the rest were pretty much worthless. The super humbuckers were very nice, and loud.

Re: What was your 1st good guitar

2001 Gibson SG Standard.  It was my humbucking guitar back in the day and it once again is after a 3 year relocation.  2001 American Series Stratocaster is my main guitar for single coils.  But the SG was first.
