Topic: reverb howling noise when playing notes

Hi

While trying to set up a couple of amps with the wet dry thing I bought a Hardwire RV-7 reverb.
Problem is when I play it on certain notes I get a low frequency howling noise coming in when
i strike the notes. Checked it on several amps, same thingm a mate has a a RV-7 and his is doing the same.
Any ideas what is causing this? Is it a digital artifact from modelling the reverb?

Re: reverb howling noise when playing notes

I don't know but I can say a good spring reverb has never let me down, Fenders has some of the best reverb around IMHO.

Re: reverb howling noise when playing notes

Are you running each amp input from a separate output of the RV-7?

Or are you using it in the loop of one or both of the amps?

I used to have the same pedal, loved the sound, excellent all the way around. I only got rid of it because I found it easier to use a rackmount reverb instead.

Re: reverb howling noise when playing notes

I have tried it in the loop of a fender amp I have but I am using it mainly in front of my plexias it has no loop.

Hardwire RV-7 reverb.

It's an analog device from what I understand, they can create their own feed back if you dial up too much within them
I had a different analog reverb and it would squeal like crazy.
Turn your reverb knobs down a bit

With the high-output pickups found on some electric guitars, it's not unusual to hear clipping when playing through an effects pedal. This occurs when the voltage range produced by a guitar's pickup is greater than the operating voltage of the effects pedal—normally limited to the voltage supplied by the effect's battery or power supply. DigiTech HardWire pedals incorporate circuitry that increases the operating voltage headroom above that of the typical effects pedal. As such, DigiTech HardWire pedals benefit a wider range of guitars and are also at home in an amplifier's effects loop.

Re: reverb howling noise when playing notes

I'm having issues with my DD3 fizzing out with each trail... Although I think there may be a fault in the effects loop!

Re: reverb howling noise when playing notes

I checked the overloading aspect, getting the phenomenon even when I turn down vol on guitar and have simple chain

Re: reverb howling noise when playing notes

If this is happing on other amps, then it is faulty, send it back to the retailer.

Re: reverb howling noise when playing notes

mate has one doing the exct same so I think it is common to this unit. You do have to listen for it
it is very underlying distortion

Re: reverb howling noise when playing notes

did you try it in front of the amp taht is not in the effects loop? Does it make the same noise? If not you could have issues with the effects loop.

Re: reverb howling noise when playing notes

Same noise whether in loop or in front with several amps tried now.

don't put the controls on the Reverb past 12 o'clock.. does it still make noise?

analog devices can get into a feed back loop within themselves.
just a thought

Re: reverb howling noise when playing notes

Makes the noise even with the controls before 12 oclock but less noticable as less reverb decay/ mix dialled in.

Re: reverb howling noise when playing notes

Maybe best to try another reverb: maybe WET or TC Hall of Fame...

Re: reverb howling noise when playing notes

I'm unclear as to what exactly the noise is because I'm obviously not there to hear it but what reverb preset are you using? Hall, Plate etc? I just can't fathom how not one but 2 (your friend's too) of these pedals is acting strange. As I stated before, I used to have one and played another before buying and they sounded absolutely fantastic. For it to be making a low "howling" noise like feedback it seems like it would only do that if the effect was dialed in too strong. But heck, it could just be a bad pedal.

I always set the reverb mix level a little on the low side but the decay long. Its not as subtle as it might sound due to the long decay. Doing this in my experience keeps the reverb from overtaking your sound, but still gives depth. Have you tried setting it like that.

Re: reverb howling noise when playing notes

First thanks guys for at least your support.
I have tried every combination of settings.  I hear it in most emulations, hall etc
The howling is subtle, it is very hard to describe and distingush.
Best way I have of hearing is to bend a single note on the G string at the 10th fret (F ) up one tone to a G. Play this very clean and as you bend the note up you can hear this howling/noise track underneath as you bend. Once you hear it then it becomes easier to identify at other pitches.  I would say it is 6 dB in volume down compared to the note being played.

I am now looking to get the boss or TC but would like to know if this is inherent in digital reverbs and why I seem to be on my own with finding it.  I would like to see if it could be discovered in a spectrum output of the pedal output but I fear it would have a spread spectrum output and hard to isolate....
