Topic: How do you over come latency issues?

I'm a real newbie to recording with computers and I've got a yamaha board that connects usb to my computer.  For the life of me I've been recording for a few months with backing tracks only to be mad and feel like I can't play at all.  I played one of my tracks today to a friend and he said you got about a half a beat latency going on.  He moved the data around where it matched and then my "Sunshine Of Your Love" track sounded like I was at least in time, but it looked like a real pain in the butt to do.  Is there a way track with what I've got without having to deal much with this issue?

Re: How do you over come latency issues?

Never mind I think I got it working close enough.  Here is a little clip I recorded of an Cream song.  I'm not 21 so I don't have to worry about posting in the youngster page and its not original.  Just tell me if you think the latency is bad or not.  My hearing sucks.  http://soundcloud.com/arnold-p-deal-iii … -brew-demo  Oh and all the electric guitar parts are me with my SG Standard and a Flextone III

Re: How do you over come latency issues?

The quality of the audio gear you have is directly proportional to the latency in my experience.

I've used cheapo Behringer gear with really bad latency problems, but since I upgraded to an Apogee Duet, it been brilliant.  Using a firewire device (such as the Duet) or High speed USB2 devices will certainly help.

Also - the speed of the computer is relevant, as is the operating RAM, but the interface is usually the bottleneck.

I would invest a bit more in good quality interface first, then perhaps look at the PC and the software.

What sort of PC do you have?  It might pay to upgrade your USB drivers for the interface too, as that can sometimes help.

True, but another word...Broke...:/ Seriouly though I was reading that was one of the many reasons people use tape.  Guess I'll have to hard wire the old tape deck up to the board.  Its funny because my old Boss digital recorder never had issues.

Re: How do you over come latency issues?

LOL I so screwed that up!  I double tracked the guitar and panned one far left the other track far right.  The solo was centered.  Everything else was a backing track.  So that was the really good part.  I basically spent 10 minutes on it just to goof around.  But thank you so much for the compliment!

Depending on you budget check out Protools and AVID interfaces.

Re: How do you over come latency issues?

You can purchase zero latency hardware. But as others said, USB2 and Firewire is faster than standard USB.
Having the fastest machine possible also helps.

Re: How do you over come latency issues?

You could also try out the ASIO4ALL low latency USB drivers.  Google 'em.

I used these with a bad Behringer guitar with a (half-)baked in USB interface connected to a cut down version of Guitar Rig. It was very useable and I didn't notice much in the way of latency problems, other than from my brain to my fingers :-)
This was running on a really slow laptop that is now about 7yrs old.

It's worth a punt as they are free.
