Topic: Why I live where I do!

This is why I live where I do. Not necessarily Yosemite, but the Sierra Nevadas in general. It's also why I fly-fish for trout. It's not the destination. It's the journey. (Shamelessly stolen quote from an unknown source!)

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: Why I live where I do!

Lovely! The Eastern Sierra is one of my favorite places, just the other side of Yosemite and full of trout as well. The Yosemite Valley itself is too trampled by tourists to invite me back for another visit.

Being a native San Diegan, I love our area for the beaches, bays, huge public parks, vibrant inner city life and diverse cultures that live here in harmony. One can visit enclaves from Africa, Asia, South America, the Middle East and more without travelling far.  Our well known perfect weather year-round to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle just puts it over the top. Here's a little slide show that gives a glimpse of some of the reasons this place is so cool. We call ourselves America's Finest City.  http://www.sandiegoscenicphotos.org/

Re: Why I live where I do!

I agree Rick on both counts. I love the Eastern Sierras around Mammoth. Spectacular! There are plenty of other lesser known valleys to get away from it all and all stunning in their own way.

Back in the late 70's and early 80's I used to go down to the San Diego area quite a bit. It has always been one of my favorite big cities. There's tons of stuff to do there.

Re: Why I live where I do!

Thanks Guido, I watched the Tour de Cali. Tue. afternoon with a good friend who has a place @ Pine Mtn. Lake in Groveland. Every time we go up to the cabin we hit Yosemite for the day. However when it's really busy we visit the Hetch Hetchy part of the park which is always quieter and still has beautiful views and easy hiking trails for a day hike. I Love all that the Sierras have to offer, I can hear Lake Tahoe calling.

Re: Why I live where I do!

I've done a little traveling around the states, but I'm so partial to where I live.....we can get to 2000ft elevation in 20 minutes and the drive "west on 80" is stunning this time of year....last Sunday I took the wife for a ride to Reno, then headed towards Lake Tahoe....the entire day was like driving inside a beautiful painting, and the air so  crisp and clean....you want to talk about clearing your head smile .....doing a few more long rides before the wifes surgery in June, she is out of character requesting to do this, so I'm going to make her as happy as possible.....if you ever get to this area, rent a convertible in May, I promise you these mountains will lower your blood pressure....I HAVE to do Yosemite before summer is out, now that scenery will make you want to never drive home....sometimes I lose sight of how blessed I am that I live where I do.....I want to here more about other areas that a long drive makes it worth the time....anyone?

Re: Why I live where I do!

Thanks for starting this Guido.  Please give us another fish story plus pictures.  I've see the Sierras from a distance, but never experienced them.  My favorite place is southwest Colorado in the San Juan mountains.
My two favorite towns in California are Frisco and beautiful San Diego.  You guys are so fortunate to live there.

Curby here's a travel advisory, when in SF don't refer to it as "Frisco". It's frowned upon by the locals, which will have them frowning upon you.

Perhaps it's our link to the steps in the food chain which goes back to the beginning of mankind. Nowadays many do it for sport and find it relaxing, especially when done with a fly rod standing in a serene mountain stream on a beautiful day, rather Zen like. Personally I have no problem with it as long as you let them go after you hook 'em.

Out here in the West and elsewhere in this hemisphere, trout fishing is a widely enjoyed recreational sport, and a significant income source for many who offer supplies and lodging where the fisheries are. These fish are NOT endangered or threatened! Trout are raised by fish hatcheries specifically for put and take and paid for by license fees. Some waters are set aside for catch and release only. Some fishermen release all they hook and the fish are not harmed if handled properly and revived in the lake or stream. Wild fishery conservation is taught and practiced by most that engage in the sport. The catching of fish is a small part of the experience because the getting out to the wild high country, stalking the fish and presenting the lure, fly or bait and getting the bite is what we enjoy most.  I happen to be a catchem and cookem person because I love to eat fish, but never take more than is reasonable for personal and family consumption, and there are strict limits on take and possession. If you've never fished, you wouldn't understand that the catching is only a tiny part of the experience, and usually, not much catching is involved unless you're quite lucky and skilled.

I understand the European point of view since there is so little wild country left there due to the heavy urbanization, and you feel that what is left must be preserved in its wild state. I won't comment on the anthropomorphization of animals by some. The areas in the Sierra we fish encompass tens of thousands of square miles of totally wild ecology in the mountains that are sparsely inhabited, and camping and fishing in the wild country is a lifestyle enjoyed by many here. I've met visiting Europeans while up there and they can't believe how much uninhabited area exists in the Western US. You can drive for hundreds of miles and not see a single habitation in some western states.
