Topic: Phil X

I thought that we should have a topic for this guy.
He is clearly one of the best players in the world and...sorry to say this...I enjoy his playing over most musicians, even Joe.
Every time I watch a video of him, it inspires me to pick up the guitar then and there and work harder at playing, but having more fun.

If some of you haven't heard of him...he does videos for the Fretted Americana company - vintage and super fine guitars!

He knows a lot of classic songs and plays them better than anyone.

He stepped in to fill Sambora's shoes in Bon Jovi and seemingly did a better job than both of them...

Seriously cool guy.

Re: Phil X

Having watched the videos you link to; yes he is a good player, but his style and tone are different to Joe's

So really it is like saying 'I like apples better than oranges' and as such is a statement of preference and not a comparison of playing ability.

Re: Phil X

I did say that was my personal opinion. No facts in music.
Enjoy!

Re: Phil X

Dave said He prefers Phil's playing over Joe's, not that either one was better than the other.

Phil definitely is a superb guitarist. Been watching his videos for quite a while now. I don't even tune in for the guitars he reviews, I just like his playing. -S

Wow that brought back some strange memories. First that vid said it was from '93 but looks like something straight outta the '80's. I remember listening to Triumph in the late '70's at a friends house who found them on a trip to Tower Records, money came very easy to this guy back then and dropping $200.00-$300.00 on vinyl was no biggy. I get the impression that Bryan Adams must have listened to these guys as his sound is similar or is it vice versa? Hey they're all Canadians, take off Eh?

Re: Phil X

Re: Phil X

I've been watching Phil's videos for a while.  There is no doubting his passion and enthusiasm for the guitar!  Like helrazr, I cannot tell you which guitars he demo's... I just enjoy the noises he makes.

Love the fact that most of his Americana videos are totally off the cuff, and he will just launch into some famous riff off the top of his head, and when he makes a clam, he just laughs like a little kids and sets off again... a reminder that guitar playing is supposed to be FUN! smile

Personally, I think Phil X can do no wrong - this is exactly the type of person you want to see when growing up with guitar music/learning to play the guitar.

Re: Phil X

I don’t hate anyone’s personal preference for taste in music. Rik Emmett has been my personal favorite since before Joe was born. To me Rik is the most talented guitarist/singer/songwriter ever and I’M sure everyone will disagree. To each they’re own.

Re: Phil X

I love Phil X, and I think the world of him.  He can play a lot of classic rock, but he wasn't the one that came up with it.  That in itself is a very nice talent.  Phil does a LOT of studio work.  He was the main guitar on the first Daughtry Album, and did some work on Kelly Clarksons albums.  He does his own stuff too in a band called Powder.

Re: Phil X

Don't forget Phil X and The Drills...hoping to see them in June - UK dates!

He also invented the 'FlipStick' and a few other things - he has his custom amps - the Evil Robot (what an amazing amp), Roppoli Plexi amps and his own sig P90 and 100 pickups...he's done and does a lot!

Re: Phil X

I wasn't being serious about hating on me! Tongue in cheek! Now if I made that comment on youtube, there would be some hating, God forbid you offend anyone on there with your own tastes..!

Exactly, his vibe rubs off even watching him online. Just a cool positive guy who happens to be the shiznit when it comes to playing guitar. Never get tired of him. He could teach the typical guitar store idiots, who are usually way too cool for school, a few things on getting people excited to play music and to have fun in a music store -regardless of skill level.

Does a pretty damn good impression of Jon Lord too... 2.10...haha

Re: Phil X

Oh my God, the harmonics at 2:58 are killer! I'd give anything to play that good, assuming I could supernaturally be granted such talent, even if it meant I would never go anywhere in music other than local bars!
