Topic: Heavy LP

Does anyone else think there Les Paul's are overly heavy? Or am I just getting old?

Re: Heavy LP

They are pretty thick and solid compared to other guitars.

I think its something you have to deal with or get used to.

Gibson in recent years has started making chambered LP's. They weigh in around 4 or 5 lbs I believe.

I have a chambered and non-chambered and I can't really tell much of a tone difference between the two.

Re: Heavy LP

I guess, I have had it guite a while and compaired to my Tele or even my Strat it still seems real heavy.

Re: Heavy LP

Get a comfortable wide strap and endure it. That's my philosophy. The tone is worth the sacrifice. In my humble opinion anyway. smile

But, if it's too heavy for you, I will gladly take it off your hands. smile

Re: Heavy LP

Weight is actually one of the things I always liked about the Les Paul. To me, it just feels solid when I play. Fenders moved too much, but I suppose it comes down to what you are used to. I do understand the getting older part though. It's been e couple decades since I have had to stand and play for a few hours.

Maybe a 50's LP Special or Junior? You would still get a good Gibson growl and be easier on your body.

Re: Heavy LP

Depends on the LP as well, I've had 13lb 90's standards that are shoulder rippers but my R8 barely tips 8.5-9lb, easy to put up with that...though I am a big gym going chap as well!

Re: Heavy LP

Feeling older with a boulder tied around your neck? big_smile My old 70's LP at 10.5 lbs was too heavy for me too. She's long gone now. I don't buy into the "heavier sounds better" schpeil. I prefer a LP to be at 8.5, a Strat at 7.5 and a Tele at 6.5-7.0

Probably both. Affects us all, I put up with it because I can't get round to a thicker strap. Starts to really hit home after about 90 minutes. Still wouldn't swap though. Just love Les Pauls.

Re: Heavy LP

Angus used to play Les Pauls but quit using them shortly before their first Album because the SG was so much lighter and could move around better on stage.  Do like the Rev Billy G and have the top removed and completely routed out to the edges.  I think his Les Paul that he did that to weights something like 6lbs!

I have to agree, a nice looking guitar on your avatar. Nice and dark...

It's a '78 50/25 anniversary issue, I fell in love with the first time I saw it.

Re: Heavy LP

Unfortunately that weight is an integral part of the LP sound. They wouldn't be the same without that mass of wood. I personally hate the newer chambered LP's because when I pick one up they don't feel right. I miss the weight when I hold them, thus I have never had the inclination to buy one. I'm sure as my back loses it's rigor I may have to rethink my guitar priorities!

Re: Heavy LP

If you watch the ZZ Top rig rundown and see the guitar tech hold up Billy's LP with 2 fingers and then hear what it wounds like you can argue that the weight doesn't necessarily ensure tone. But also, his sound is very digitized so you can make that argument too, but he still has a monster live tone. I've never played a "light" weight les paul, but when I bought my first LP (the first one I ever played) I knew as soon as I unpacked it and plugged in what everyone was talking about regarding their tone. If its the weight, then so be it. But like Spider, I don't totally buy into the weight equals tone thing. There is a company that makes the stretchy neoprene or something straps that dramatically  help fatigue. A little silly looking but they help. -S

They are super heavy... although newer ones can be lighter.
Strats these days are heavier than the old ones. I constantly look for one that's both light AND sound good...

Re: Heavy LP

I noticed it the minute I pickup up a PRS custom, barely noticed the thing.

The weight doesn't really bother me anymore, I just adjust the guitar to hang a little higher.
