Topic: New John Mayer Album

Just received the New Mayer Album "Born& Raised" which was actually released on the same day together with DTTD here in Germany.
This CD might disappoint a lot of Blues Addicts but I personally are so diggin the honest, minimalistic Country Approach of the Album.
AND there are some great (but not flashy ;-)) guitar solos on there!

If you don´t mind the Country/Singer/Songwriter approach than have a listen!

Re: New John Mayer Album

Just for reference there is a thread about John Mayer's new single "Shadow Days" here: https://forum.jbonamassa.com/viewtopic.php?id=20448

Shadow Days is the only song i've heard of the album and I really enjoy listening to it now and again. It still sounds like the same John Mayer "polished" sound to me though but with more of a country-folk-esque feel.

Re: New John Mayer Album

I won't slag John, but I don't get his appeal.

You can currently listen to the entire album for free on I-tunes.  I would not classify myself as a fan, but I kind of like what I've heard so far.

As Phil Jackson said, "You're probably right, but I just threw up in my mouth a little bit".

Re: New John Mayer Album

I was introduced to John through someone on here .... Curby i think. Went out and bought Continuum - that initial interest has now spread to the JM Trio - and to the double live album @ the Nokia Theater.  ~love~

a lot of negative stuff gets written about him, but, i like what i like, regardless of what is written - my ears tell me, this guy is talented - that's all i need to know.

Re: New John Mayer Album

I bought the album two days ago and just love it. I love the country approach he's trying to make. It's exactly what's been said in a post above; some blues-type fans of his albums might be disappointed but I think John has made a right choice choosing this path of music for ones!

Re: New John Mayer Album

I haven't decided if I'm going to buy this yet. I love John's playing and most of his singing. Continuum is one of the best albums of the Century and Battle Studies was a solid record, but I don't know if I can really buy John as a country boy, dressing up like Neil Young and singing country/folk tunes.

John, please get Pino and Steve back together and put out another rockin' live blues record.

Re: New John Mayer Album

I heard the album on Itunes yesterday, and I really enjoyed it.

Re: New John Mayer Album

Went to Itunes out of curiosity and talk about reinventing the wheel at least the John Mayer wheel. This album is either genius or career suicide. Time will tell. I liked the first song reminded of me of the time I was into California Contemporary country rock. Eagles, Poco, mid seventies stuff. I saw him on Letterman sitting in with the band wearing the hat ant the old coat kind of doing a Johnny Depp look thing. I wonder if he is trying to reinvent himself again. Pop star, Guitar Hero, now Troubadour, Neil Young thing. He was doing some serious shredding on the breaks with Paul Schaeffer.  Mayer is really an enigma for me now. Don't know quite what to think. Talented guy but he seems to be his own worst enemy. I may download the album and see if I can't connect with it.

Re: New John Mayer Album

It is better than Battle Studies, which to me was a terrible Pop album. This album has a very Neil Young - Harvest Moon kind of vibe. It is not a blues or guitar album. But does have a nice laid back feel to it. Much better than previous work; but not for the guitar or blues crowd - IMO

I actually really liked Battle Studies, but yeah it does have more of a Neil Young feel maybe. Its definitely not a guitar or blues album but its a nice change of pace on the iPod. Sometimes you're more in the mood for regular songs than "guitar songs". He's not afraid to try different things when it comes to albums and music. -S

Re: New John Mayer Album

In at No. 4 in the UK album chart.

Re: New John Mayer Album

I've had the album for a few days now. The kind of album that grows on you the more you listen to it. No weak tracks and the ones that stand out for me are 'Queen of California' and 'If I ever get around to living'. Great album.

Re: New John Mayer Album

I like the new album. It's nice to hear him do something a little different this time. Hope his vocal issues get resolved so he can go on tour again.

Re: New John Mayer Album

I don't know about you guys... But when he plays SRV style blues he rocks... But all his polished poppy stuff is crap!!

Re: New John Mayer Album

Have you listened to the album at all? Name one track that is "polished" or "poppy". It is folk- and country-flavoured but certainly not pop. True, there are no predictable, formulaic shuffle rip-offs and that's exactly what made me buy the album. It is a grower and I consider it to be among Mayer's best work.
