Re: Rockpalast Rig

The actual rig on the video is what survived the trek in Europe on that tour in 2005.   Mind you the Rockpalast gig was show 13 of 13 in a row still my personal record and will not be attempted again..  So as it stands heres what it was..
Budda Superdrive 80 and 2x12 cab
Marshall Bluesbreaker combo ( with a JCM 900 with 5881s running the speakers)  The amp section of the Bluesbreaker blew up the night before..
As far as pedals....  I forget what I was using at the time but it wasn't much... DD-3 Delay, Tubescreamer...  Pretty basic...

Hope that helps
Joe B

I think in the video he used a Line 6 and a Bluesbreaker.

WTF, a line 6?!?!? He can't have... never....

I have heard on some occasions Joe would use the Line6 for the TwinReverb sounds because vintage Twin Reverbs would break down on the road, and the Line6 was more dependable. Also used Line6 was used for quick and fast shows when the main rig wasn't being brought in.

Re: Rockpalast Rig

I still can't fully gather why that is such a monstrous tone on that dvd/cd.
Preamp section of a BB into power section of a 900 - with the 5881s and a couple of Buddas.

Still one of my favourite concert recordings because of that tone all the way through....and The River!

Fingers McGee...that's the secret.

And Czar's bass tone is enough to make the moon shift orbit. Wonderful all round.

Budda amps always sound big, and the SD80 was the big daddy.  Always loved JB's Budda tones and miss them.  Anyhow, it was a JCM 900 head plugged into the speakers of the BB combo, so the chassis of the BB was fully disconnected as it had blown.

Rockpalast is my favorite Joe recording. I absolutely love the tone and the set list.

JCM 900 mmm, that is a surprise

Re: Rockpalast Rig

Best live sound recorded i've heard yet on DVD from Joe , and with a real Bass player that can play leads as well with him.
That Budda amp was kicking azz and with those cheap pedals he used too .
Sure wish Joe would venture back to a three piece again with that raw RNR band kind of vibe. It just seems a little to polished now with his 4 amp setup and backup players that sound like studio musicians live , like a memorex recording . No disrespect to them at all though , just my opinion.
Just goes to show you Joe's tones are in his fingers.

Gibson Smartwood LP , Performance custom strats , Warmoth custom guitars.
Soldano amps, 4X12 cabinets with EVM12L's,TC electronics SCF chorus & vintage delays,Lexicon PCM 41 delays.

Haha, that's one way to look at it.

I for one, like the way how Joe's style has changed. He has brought out so many records and  I like hearing how he is looking for his own style and sound. Just as us musicians do. No one keeps the same sound. Even the 3 chord rock n roll sound of AC/DC has changed! I have a long way to go as a guitarist to get any where near JoeB himself but I find listening to all his records a very inspiring journey and it helps me find my own way in music.  And lets be honest.... he doesn't need 6 100 watt heads and 3 EV12l cabinets but  IF you could afford it AND carry it along, wouldn't you? just for the looks?
Haha, as Joe said himself: It just looks cool on stage!

Me too. Better musicianship (as a band), better and more diverse songwriting. The only way is forward.

I'm not saying Joe should always stay the same year after year , just bring back some of the raw edge that he once had.
Heck , i don't play the same after 25years either. I have changed from 80's rock to Blues rock but i still sound like me know matter what amp i play. The same with Joe , combo's ,heads , multiple heads and cabinets , in the end he still has his signature sound and of course those fingers, lol.
As for the AC/DC , even they still have that raw RNR sounds even though they just keep changing the same 4 chords around album after album. Seen many of their tours and they still perform very Loud and Raw even at their age, lol.
That's what i see missing with the new JB sound , it's almost to perfect live and the raw vibe is almost gone and new band sounds like a pre-recorded well planned out concert. If you listen to the Rockpalast DVD you can hear and see the mistakes Eric Czar makes by clawing certain notes making in sound slightly out of pitch. But that's ok , he's human and that adds a certain element and raw vibe to the trio which you don't hear in the newer lineup.
The newer stuff to me sounds like it's always perfectly played , and that's not a bad thing either if you want a studio perfection sound live . But to me i guess i like to hear a live raw Band pushing each other in the band to the edge with no duel drummers, keyboard players, and 600 watts of tube power to top it all off.
Again , just my opinion though..
