I don't think I've ever played a bad Yamaha.
Many of their mid-priced instruments are nicer straight out the box than some at double the price or more.

Now here is a tone challenge. An acoustic guitar that you would want to play everyday for under a grand. I love the acoustic guitar and have owned a couple of nice ones in my lifetime. At one point in my life I got rid of all guitars........no regrets. When I wanted to start playing again I too was in the same boat you are now in Rick.  I wound up with a Morgan Monroe I don't know the model number but it is obviously a Martin OM design. They advertise it as pre war design. It's got a spruce top rosewood back and sides and an ebony board, all solid wood. I bought it off ebay new for $400 bucks a couple of years ago. The down side is that it is assembled in China. I have made some improvements to the instrument which were necessary. Right out of the box I had the frets leveled and polished and some actually had to be reglued. I changed the tuners to mini grovers to help with the tuning issues which were making me crazy. I play this guitar alot and am happy with it.

PS-I still want a Martin OM-42.

Martin D-15.  Well under a grand and made in the Nazareth, PA USA factory.  Great blues / blues slide guitar tones!
