Yamaha provide awesome bang for your buck.... their high mid range/top of the line models would be a good choice...

Joe played them for WUD for a while. Stuffed with beach towels.
If your going for a 100% acoustic guitar $1000 will take you to a lot of places. I've seen some sweet sounding Taylor guitars for around $899 on Wildwoodguitars.com Breed love has some excellent choices as well. If your wanting acoustic Electric Yamaha might be your best choice. You can find some Breed Love guitars under $1000 acoustic electric. I would try looking on Ebay for used guitars that would have been in the $1200 to $1400 range. Sometimes you can snage a great deal on a guitar like that for under a grand. If it was me I would shoot for a Taylor, but thats just me.
Second on the Breedlove. I paid somewhere around $600 for mine, and got rid of my Taylor which was much more expensive. I absolutely love the Breedlove.
Takamine have some excellent acoustics and I agree with the Yamaha suggestion too. I think Gibson have just released a J-200 'Studio' costing a little over the $1000 mark that might be worth a shot, although I have not personally tried one.
Tanglewood make really good acoustic's also at a good price.

I will second the Takaimine...

I have this model and it sounds and plays great. The action is just as low as my electrics.
Takamine, Breedlove, or Martin's import brand - Sigma. Quite good (at least mine from 1983 was).
I like my Martin OM-1
Its a Sitka Spruce top, Sapele sides (both solid) and a laminate neck.
American made.
They also have acoustic models at 899, acoustic electric and acoustic electric cutaway.
Somebody has to ask: what's the make/model of the acoustic Joe plays in concert?

I believe an Alvarez Yairi is his latest. Maybe Koa wood?
I'd be using that 1,000 bucks toward a Martin if I were looking to buy a nice acoustic. I've played several and owned a few Ibanez's in the 400-500 dollar range and they played and felt nice. I was doing a lot of solos and stuff when I was playing acoustic gigs and they worked well for that. The electronics weren't as loud as higher end guitars, but the guitars themselves weren't bad in my experience.

I believe we have a winner. Last I knew it was an Alvarez.
He's uses a Bob Weir signature Alvarez I believe
Yamaha FJX are great guitars (I have one) and they sound just like Joe's old high end LJX models
I don't think I've ever played a bad Yamaha.
Many of their mid-priced instruments are nicer straight out the box than some at double the price or more.
What about the PRS SE acoustic series? I'm sure they are good too, but I have no experience with them.
Breedlove and Bedell(same owner), are some of the best acoustic guitars under 1K I've heard. They are a sponsor of Blue Star Connection as well. Great people.
