Topic: Indigneous in their latest incarnation!

Mato has just teamed up with the Kris Lager Band... Hopefully this will become a permanent thing. Anyone who has seen Indigenous in the past needs to check them out again. Wow! I haven't seen Mato have so much fun on stage... well... ever! Great show. But you'll have to catch them all live. They just joined together a couple of weeks ago from what I understand. Well worth the effort to see them!

Re: Indigneous in their latest incarnation!

We have seen Indigenous in the past many times and Mato is a great player.  With Mato playing in a new band, are they going to retain the name Kris Lager Band or is the new Indigenous?

Re: Indigneous in their latest incarnation!

We just saw them in Houston not long ago. It was billed as Indigenous. There was about 100 or so paid. To be honest we didn't care for it at all. Sure it looked like Mato was having a good time, but for us, the sound was not there. There were many times during the show that Mato didn't take the solo; he handed it off to the other guy (kris lager?). We didn't stay for the end. Things sure have changed for Mato and Indigenous over the past few years and I'm not sure why. It wasn't that long ago that we saw them with a couple thousand people paid and the band just crushed. Puzzling to me.

That's too bad Phil to hear that because they could tear up it for sure... Wandi, Pte, Horse really added a lot to Mato.

I agree 100%. They had a nice complimentary chemistry. I had high hopes for this most recent show. Seemed like an above average bar band now. Just my opinion, I'm sure there was probably 97 or 98 people at that show that would disagree.

Re: Indigneous in their latest incarnation!

Having never seen the original band play an entire set, the show I saw got rained out two songs into it. I have seen Kris Lager open for Mato and what was then touring as Indigenous last December. I liked the three piece band with Mato it was a power trio. Mato pulled it off and he carried it like I remembered the short time I saw him a few years earlier.

The next time through it was Mato fronting the Kris Lager band basically. It was a surprise. Kris Lager has a pretty good B3 player and Kris is a pretty good guitar player himself. Playing in what is now a five piece band the dynamics change completely. Having basically  two other instruments a guitar and keyboard forces Mato to change his style of playing so it doesn't sound like a train wreck.

Not really being an Indigenous fan in the past I didn't have the original lineup to compare too just the trio he had recently I thought it was good in a different way. Still only 100 pd which is not good in a state that Indigenous had a big following.

I think Mato is looking for a comfort zone he hasn't had since the original band broke up. He enjoys Kris and his band they have been friends for awhile. Kris likes playing with Mato. They are just seeing how it goes for awhile and decide how to proceed.  In essence it is almost like starting over for Mato.

Re: Indigneous in their latest incarnation!

Thats really sad to hear, especially since I liked the album Chasin the Sun a lot.  I loved the old band, but I always came to hear Mato.  We'll see what happens when I see them at the end of August.

Re: Indigneous in their latest incarnation!

I've lived around alot of Indians over the years; most are country or into the local traditional fiddle jiggin songs; they wanna dance and actually most Indians are more musically inclined than us white people.  Ya know if native friend stops by and you have a geetar or piano, or drum or anything sittin there; they'll head over and pick it up everytime; try to get some sound outta it, no joke in their culture.  They make their own fiddles around here outta birch & moose bone for pegs and chin pieces.

You'll hear  Indigneous cd's in all the villages, one of the more recent bands they know of.  You see, up here, they still play alot of Patsy Cline on the Kareoke, and nothin wrong with that I guess.

Re: Indigneous in their latest incarnation!

Oh good, Jane. I am so glad that you felt the same way we did. Hopefully folks will listen to you!!!!

I'd hate for anyone to miss this show. I almost didn't go see Buddy Guy due to the reviews on here. Boy would I have been sorry. We loved that show too.

But Indigenous was great this time around and were havin' a great time together.

Glad to hear your enthusiasm!!

Re: Indigneous in their latest incarnation!

Thanks Jane for the update, have always liked indigenous, mainly with the original band.  So it will be interesting to see how the new band gels.  Are there any Native Americans besides Mato in the band?

Re: Indigneous in their latest incarnation!

What a freakin show last night at the Rams Head!

Totally agree.  I loved the family band, but its a different sound.  They are def. more of a rock band now.  I love that Mato not only has a keyboard player, but also a backup guitarist.  I think it allows him to do a little more.

I've probably seen Indigenous in all its incarnations probably 10 times now, and this was by far the best that I have seen.  Will never miss them again if they stay with the band. Hard and driving...but full of tone and passion.  Wow.

Don't miss um if they come around.

Re: Indigneous in their latest incarnation!

Haha.  It was a tight squeeze, but they made it.  I mean, I guess you are right Jane.  But from a technical term, Lager was the backup....but I didn't mean it as disrespectful...that guy can play.  If you get a good table at the Rams Head, it can be a great show.  I may go back on Monday to see Mark Ford from the Crowes.  Sorry I missed you Jane...also, Carl, I looked briefly for ya, but didn't see you.

Re: Indigneous in their latest incarnation!

I was there....bascially dead center along the main walkway....with dribbles of blood coming out of my ears from the excessive volume flowing off the stage.  Pretty impressive musicianship all around but too loud to possibly enjoy....I SO missed the dynamics of a Joe show..."bring it WAY down heahhhh" so you could actually hear some separation of the instruments.  I would have liked to been able to hear the keyboard solo...fer chrissakes.  Also, I have to say, I guess i'm spoiled....other than a few new songs with a radically different groove I hadn't heard before and really liked (names unknown) it all pretty much sounded like the same re-hashed Indigenous tunes.  He's a great guitarist but doesn't have the breadth of abilities to keep me that interested for a whole show.

Not hatin' here...just my honest $0.02.  I'd LOVE to be able to play lead guitar as well as they do....but I won't go out of my way to see them again.  Guess they'll have another small chance to impress me at DAR at Experience Hendrix next month.  We'll see.

Re: Indigneous in their latest incarnation!

Thats interesting Carl.  I was sitting about a tables length away on the side of the stage, and the sound was perfect.  Not too loud, and the keyboard was very very clear for me.  I wonder if its just a matter of where you sit, because I thought sound wise, this was one of the better shows I've seen at the Rams Head.

Also, I will be at the DAR show...I'm really excited to see Mato on the bill.  My god, he, KWS, Jonny Lang, Buddy Guy, Robert Randolph, Double Trouble, and more...I can't get over my excitement...hopefully I'll see you there.

Re: Indigneous in their latest incarnation!

Oh, Chris, I'm very jealous. What a lineup. I don't know what DAR is but it will be spectacular with that list.

Carl, I've heard others make comments about the Indigenous shows, not the loud part, but the sameness of the songs. I didn't feel that way, but everyone hears a show for themselves, thank goodness.

By the way, I'd really recommend a good set of earplugs. I got some late last year, actually I think the first time I used them was at Chris Duarte. They have stayed with me ever since. At age 44 I decided I've still got a boatload of shows I want to enjoy so I'm gonna make it last as long as possible!!

And if you see Chris, you'll definitely need plugs, good sound or bad!! His show right now is just plain loud!

I got some that really do a good job. You can hear the person next to you talking but at the same time it really doesn't muffle the music at all. Well worth if to me!!!
