Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

I know about the initiation business, but I also know that several of the people I saw on ESPN yesterday agree with me, that the suspension was a joke, and that the attitude of the club was shameful, particularly because Bryce had not offended or dissed anyone to 'earn' any kind of 'retribution' - and, that in these days where all pro sports in the US are far more conscious about the safety factor of their players than ever before, this kind of old-fashioned 'man stuff' is out of place.

G Dawg, trust me, I've met many pro baseball players over the years. from the lowest single A ranks these guys begin to posture to go toe to toe when they get to "The Show". It's not as pleasant as it looks on TV, it's a dog eat dog business with serious money involved. Egos play a big part on the field, regardless of how approachable and buddy buddy they may appear at public appearances. These aren't soccer floppers, they're tobacco chewing, scrotum scratchin', I'll break your ankle @ 2nd base ball players. Like Tom Hanks said, "There's no crying in baseball!".

I thought Bryce was pretty cool with it, believe he even said "no big deal". It is a rite of passage, a formal initiation, but it wasn't necessary in any way. One thing I will agree with George, he confessed and thereby should have received 10 to 15 games, or 2-3 starts. Bryce did pay him back by stealing home, in your face Hamels!

He better be cool with it, cuz if he whines about it a fastball is gonna find his earhole, remember Field of Dreams? gettin' on base and makin' the opponent pay is how you play the game. The kid's got all the tools for a brilliant career, I wish him luck.

OK, here goes, my jury is still out on that addict, especially after he fell off the wagon in the off season. Granted, he must feel like hell after enticing that poor fan to fall outta the stands trying to grab his kid a ball, but the demons are still there and it scares anybody that's been there to imagine where he could go from here.

I don't claim to know a lot about baseball history, but personally I think Cole's actions were totally unnecessary. It seems like a silly rite of passage to me and a stupid tradition to carry forward. IMO

We agree to disagree. There have been deaths and serious injury by pitches, but to my knowledge, never by an intentional plunking. Some of the best pitchers were most effective by having a touch of intimidating random wildness. It takes guts to stand in the box with a fireballer on the mound. It is a part of pitching to throw inside to keep the sluggers off the plate. We've got a kid that is looking to be our closer who tosses easy looking gas that pips the gun consistently at 100-102! He's a bit wild at times too. yikes

This scares me a lot more than an intentional beaning. I am in the commercial wood door business and I know for a fact that new growth maple trees are being harvested way too early. Maple has really become popular with a lot of architects and interior design folks, it doesn't matter for a wood door veneer but it does for a bat if that wood is too soft. That's why you are seeing a lot of splintered bats, many heading into the field of play. I wish they would all go back to Ash and do away with the maple altogether. Someday there may be one that sticks in somebody's head, but I hope not.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

It may come down to the composite bats now used in Little League and HS/College with the rapid loss of old growth wood. These were made to reduce the recoil acceleration and danger to the pitcher but could be engineered for the big leagues as well. I agree the danger of spearing by an splintered bat is huge and there have been scary incidents already.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

OK fellas, we voiced our opinions, so back to the lighter side of this topic. I didn't think I'd be able to watch the Giants last night after the bumbling fiasco in LA Mon. night. I happened to be @ my local Sports Bar downtown to catch the end of the Indians/White Sox game and caught the start of the SF/LA game when lo & behold Brett Pill crushed a 2 run dinger off Clayton "The Giant Killer" Kershaw. So being the staunch Giant fan that I am I thought, hey this guy can't beat us forever and whattayaknow, last night he didn't. The Giants made a 2-1 score hold up for the win.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

thanks Dawg for getting us out of the gutter. We just lost a day game to them Cubbies, 1-0. We barely won last night thanks to Dan Uggla or it's a sweep at the Wrig. It's like something out of the Wizard of Oz, are you a good bat, or a bad bat? roll Off to St Louis on Friday, the damn bats had better pick up the pace.
Congrats to Freddie Freeman of ATL, NL player of the week last week, and had the honor also 2 weeks prior to that. Beat them stinkin Cards, might wish they still had Pulbert Ajols. lol I'm not dyslexic, it's a game we play swapping letters in the name. How about Hole Camels?

Nothing against Uggla, but the Sweep was avoided because the Cubs have a crap bullpen and Kerry Wood can't get anyone out. Poor Ryan Dempster..5 starts, 1.02 ERA and he's 0-1. He's handed at least 3 games to the bullpen with the lead.

Didn't see the end of your game, but Dan's sister was glued to it sitting behind me while her husband and I focused on the Giants game. The "Freak" is diggin' himself a hole in the Bot of 4 in LA @ the moment. Looks like the Tribe may be coming back to earth losing again to the ChiSox 8-1.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Ok, dummy here needs some more stuff s'plained to him.

What determines whether a starting pitcher is credited with the win or loss when they've already left the game?

What determines whether or not a relief pitcher is credited with same?

I noticed that Strasburg threw 13 k's last night. I don't recall seeing anyone have more than that this season (could easily have missed it if it did happen) - how rare is a total of 13 k's in seven innings? I was mightily impressed. big_smile

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

yeah Pitt really let me down AH (ATL fan) smile , he was on fire for sure and that is impressive. The starting pitcher must go a minimum of 5 complete innings, leaving the game at anytime thereafter with the lead, his team wins the game, and he gets the win. The relief stuff is a little more complicated, I have to ask myself sometimes and will defer to Dawg and Rick to try and explain end game scenarios.
