It sounds like the best decision to me.If it was me I would discuss your desires for live music and find a way to make it work within the family budget.Good luck!
  PS I'm lucky I my woman usually likes my music.She is more into trance like Tiesto.But she likes jazz,funk,soul,reggae, rock and blues so its never an issue.In the summer there are plenty of fests around Chi town that have great music and don't cost too much except the drinks lol.
