Maybe just when Ryan "The Juicer" Braun comes to town. Petco is the 6th toughest park in the Majors to hit one out as of the end of April.

May 1, 1991, Rickey Henderson breaks Lou Brocks record for most stolen bases. Not to be outdone by Rickey, Nolan Ryan goes out and throws a no-hitter that night. The 7th and final one of his illustrious career vs. the Toronto Blue Jays.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

that was a wild one in ATL last night. Phils had beaten us the last 8 times played. We didn't get to Halladay early and were down 6-0, so switched to an NBA game and came back later for quite a shock. The old man Chipper finally got it done with a 2 run blast, but had just barely missed one 2 pitches prior to the walk off. On benefits of retiring after this year, he said that it will be great that his kids can now call him dad, instead of Chipper Jones. It sounded funnier the way he said it.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Question for you serious BB fans - what's more important in the long haul, offense or defense? The reason that I'm asking is this - I've been keeping an eye on the Nats since their astonishing start to the season, and have been impressed by how close all their games are, they neither win nor lose by a large margin.

So, I had a quick look at the stats, and found that only Miami in the Eastern basement have scored less runs (78 to 80), but no other team in baseball has given up anything like as few runs as the Nats have, a miserly 68. In the long haul then, will their inability to score a lot of runs outweigh their ability to restrict opponents to very few runs?

the "experts" have always concurred that good pitching will beat good hitting. We are only a month in, however the Nats are still leading the division with a decent .625 win percentage. That would suggest that the hitting is good enough to keep them close in most games. I saw where they brought up Bryce presumably to help them score more runs. If, if, if the starters stay healthy then I believe they will be in the mix come end of September.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

George, I am a serious baseball fan, but I'm not an expert or anything. From my point of view, I'm going to say you need both and some balance, BUT you can't win without offense because there won't be any runs scored. Just look at my Phillies, declining offense since they won the World Series a few years back. Last year they had the best record in baseball and they couldn't get it done because they couldn't score runs. If I was the one spending on payroll, I would have spent some $$$ on a hot bat!! Of course, in the scheme of the game its not all 1 + 1 = 2  lol $hit happens, especially unexpected errors which can haunt the outcome of a game.

The Nats have come out of the basement, for sure. They have a couple of my x- Phillies, especially Jayson Werth. I still find it humorous that one of the things they are doing to rebuild their team and bring the fans back is to deny selling tickets to Phillie fans. We'll see how that goes this weekend, lots of Phillie fans now work in Virginia, Maryland, DC and had the required drivers license to buy tickets.

Totally wild!! Yeah, in the big picture, good for Chipper, he took some heat for being the choke artist. I'm just curious if your sports announcers made any comments about the ump calling that 3rd strike on Jimmy Rollins in the top of the 9th?

must confess that I was watching NBA at that time and missed it. We needed all kind of breaks to end that 8 game streak.

I happened to tune into the O's vs Red Sox in the 15th.....now bottom of the 17th with a three run lead for the O's, neither team has any pitchers left....O's about to sweep the Sox for the first time since '94....a fielder will be the winning pitcher big_smile

The poor Padres can't catch a break. Now they have lost two more pitchers,Leubke a promising young left hander who looks to be out for the season with elbow surgery pending and a mid relief guy all within two innings. 7 on the DL now. On track to lose 100+ this year. hmm I feel like a Cubbies fan. yikes

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Braves now bearing down on those Nats, a great weekend sweep in Colorado. We came back from down 5-0 in the first game, and then did it again Sat night down 6-0. I guess you saw where Jamie Moyer accused Chipper of stealing signs, what a jerk. Chips was some kind of pissed and offered to "meet him in the tunnel to discuss". He said Moyer must be paranoid because he came from the Phils, a team known for stealing signs in the past. Rock on at Chicago Cubs baby, we get Samardgarine, Samard..something...f#k, the wide receiver guy from Notre Dame. lol

Sir Margarine had our number last night, good win for the Cubbies. He has really come on and last night had great location and was changing speeds well. He uses a splitfinger technique for his change-up, fairly devastating. Braves bats never figured out how to get to him.

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

Well, the 'Battle of the Beltway' is still going strong, with the O' and Nats having two of the best four records in baseball - in May!

But that's not what I came in here for, there's something I want to get off my chest. I am utterly shocked and appalled by the Cole Hamels 'affair', and by the pathetic reactions of his club and the authorities. I just heard the Phillies VP of something barely manage to say that he was 'disappointed'. roll

And what's worse, they're 'disappointed' that Hamels was dumb enough to admit it, not that he actually deliberately tried to hurt another player during a game. In a similar situation in soccer over here, such a player could count on outright condemnation as well as a huge fine from his club, not to mention a suspension of such length that it actually meant something - unlike this joke five day suspension Hamels got, which simply means (as I understand it) that he will next pitch one day later than he would otherwise have done. Some suspension. roll

Rant over. big_smile

That's baseball G Dawg, there's unwritten laws within the game. This was a bit more extreme, but in Hamel's defense he did hit him in the back, not the head. Usually a purpose pitch is aimed at the glutus maximus. The league is wayyyyy more PC about responding to these situations nowadays. When Willie Mays came up every pitcher in the league threw at his head, they'd pay for it by putting him on base, then he'd steal 2nd & 3rd. Everytime Don Drysdale pitched against the Giants he threw @ Willie. If you want to blame somebody, blame the media for hyping Harper as the next coming of Christ. The plunking was the Phillies way of welcoming the phenom to "The Show". Remember, "There's no crying in baseball!".

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

J Dawg has it right George. If your pitcher even causes a knockdown to their slugger by throwing inside, your guy can expect the same. Even showing up or disrespecting the other team can and will lead to retaliation. Maybe not this game but memories and grudges are long in the game.

Jdawg and Rick have it right....BUT!!....Cole Hamels is a ***%#, I hope Harper charges the mound in a few years and gives Hamels a "noogie", just like what Nolan Ryan did to Robin Ventura years back...."hey Harper, enough of the rah rah crap, your in the big show, so start acting like a 20 year vet instead of a 19 yo, wet behind the ears ahole

Re: 2024 Major League Baseball season

I thought Bryce was pretty cool with it, believe he even said "no big deal". It is a rite of passage, a formal initiation, but it wasn't necessary in any way. One thing I will agree with George, he confessed and thereby should have received 10 to 15 games, or 2-3 starts. Bryce did pay him back by stealing home, in your face Hamels!
