I am going to say Scott's name...so I am sorry in advance. I have been to many shows, but this is a blues show one.
I first met Buddy Guy when I was a producer of a blues fest in Kaukauna. I was honestly scared, it was the largest check I ever wrote for talent, and I was scared of him too. All those stories and what not. He had just released Sweet Tea, so you have a time frame.
So I called my friend Scott and asked him for some advice in dealing with Buddy. He told me what to do, and how to be. So that is what I went with. He also told me a story to tell if I got in trouble. Well I thought I got in trouble, and I started telling the story. So it is me and Buddy and I think his manager in the back of the limo, and Buddy got real quiet and serious. Looks at me and scowls and says, "How do you know that story?" The F word was in there too. I nearly crap. I mean, I am dying. I just want to hand him the check and run, and call my mom. Its bad.
Then he starts laughing, and the whole deal. And I nearly die.
So that is not bad enough. I get out of the car and go to the edge of the stage in the backstage area. So there we are, and Buddy is doing the "You like Jimi thing?" and playing Jimi. SRV, playing SRV. Asking people who they want to hear, were getting Clapton, Jeff Beck...all the greats.
Well I decide for fun I am going to yell something. I have a big voice. My inside voice is louder than your outside voice in most cases. So I yell out "Scott Holt".
At which point Buddy stops. On stage in front of 5000 people, and turns toward me and says (into the mic), "I know that ##%@$". And goes back to playing whatever.
I stood there unsure as to what to do. Sure he was going to have his guitar tech kill me. It was funny to all of my friends.
And I can laugh now, but only years later.
Another story...
I bumped (literally) into Johnny Cash in an alley behind a theatre the Carter family was playing at. Literally ran into each other. He apologized, and then remembered meeting me three years earlier and said, "I was wondering if you were here tonight Dino. Your from here, and I remembered." I had met him in Los Angeles, and bumped into him in Wausau. When he said my name, I nearly pee'd.
