They certainly did, some three piece and some four. If you can find one in good knick they're great guitars, some of them have had so much work and beating around them though the pancake body becomes suspect. 70s customs are phenomenal to play however, love 'em to bits.
I'm going to look for a 70s custom. I saw 78 standard a few weeks ago but it had gone by the time I got to to it.
4 piece? Yikes. I wonder if it was a cost cutting exercise or a wood shortage?
I have no idea why they did it but remember trying a couple of standards and deluxes which were maple top then mahogany maple mahogany for the rest of the body.
Sounded great but the 70s customs for me are still some of the best sounding guitars I have ever tried - very resonant.
