Topic: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

So last week my Jubilee starting making this Buzzing sound randomly, it sounds like you have the amp on but no guitar plugged in kinda noise. Sometimes it does it after 2 minutes some times after two hours always random, I checked all my cables, cleaned the knobs and jacks but it still does it. It all started when I started using the effect loop again, so I am thinking I have a bad soder connection somewhere, but the problem doesn't go away when I pull the effects loop cables. It does go away when I pull the input jack cable and put it back in. I don't think its a tube problem the amp sounds great and I don't lose volume or anything. I am going to take it to my amp tech I just though I would see if anyone else had this issue before.

Re: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

You could have a hairline fracture in the board or a dry solder on the points of the input jack..

Re: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

Have you tried a different input cable? Hum is an indication of an open ground return path, or "floating input". A cracked solder connection on the jack ground, loose jack nut, or pcb connection is also possible  as stephanhauk said. If you are confident, take off the cover and tap around these areas with an insulated tool to see if you can induce the problem and isolate the area if replacing the cable doesn't work. Be aware lethal voltages are present! Take it to your tech if you don't feel comfortable doing this.

Re: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

I am going to open it up and take a peek, I really hope its not a crack in the board. I think its a soder joint or an input jack going back. The send jack looks funny to me the cable looks slanted when I put it in and that is where the problem started. Kinda sucks the amps been sounding really good and I have some cash put aside to retube my Fender Bassman but I guess that will no go to the tech for the Marshall.

Re: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

That amp is almost 30 years old. Send it to a tech. It may need new caps, or may need some solder joints looked at.. Either way, poking around inside an amplifier can be deadly, as there are high voltage charges stored within some of the components. Jubilee amps are too special (and rare) to fool around with if you are not a professional.

Re: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

Could be any number of things, I've had Marshall fix a raft of problems on Jubilees and the Slash 2555 simply due to wear and tear. Best get a tech to give it a top to bottom look over though no harm in my opinion having a peak inside to see if anything obvious - just make sure it's switched off and unplugged!

Re: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

Definitely take it to a qualified tech to have it looked at. Better safe than sorry.

Re: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

I opened her up didn't see any bad soder joints and there are no cracks on the board. I did tighten up some loose jacks in the back, I have her running now with the pedal but nothing in the FX loops for about 30 minutes and its as quiet as a mouse. I also bought a cable tester and checked all my guitar cables all the cables on the board and the effects loop circuit and everything came back good. I am going to try and put the delay back in the loop and see if the problem happens again. At this point I want to figure out if I can recreate the problem so when I can take it to the tech I can tell them how I did so they can recreate it.

Loose jacks could have been the problem. Cross your fingers, maybe you got lucky. smile

That's the catch,, You won't see a bad solder joint and probably not a hair line crack in a trace on the pcb board.

Cap's dry and like it was said, maybe you need to have new cap's installed and the solder joints touched up, etc.

Re: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

You're best off not touching it too much as valve amps can retain significant amounts of voltage for a fair while after powering down!!

Re: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

Ran her for about 45 minutes today and no issues I have practice later this week will see what happens. I am guessing it will happen again going to call the tech tomorrow and see when they have time to look at it.

Re: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

Last issue I had with the Slash 2555 Marshall replaced the jacks and that solved it...might just be dusty and loose.

Re: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

I ran the Marshall for 2 hours last night at band practice and not a peep of the buzzy sound, maybe it was just a loose jack.

excellent!

Re: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

I had a similar problem on a 2558.
Turned out to be a faulty master volume pot.

Re: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

I have a 2553 from 89 and had the same problem. I thought it was my DD3 in the loop and tried a delay pedal from the local guitar shop and same thing. The guy suggested spraying some contact cleaner in the effects loop jacks and it worked a treat that was about 6 months ago and haven't had a problem since. It's something to do with where the FX loop sits in the chain or something.

Re: Weird Marshall Jubilee problem

It seems fixed, I have practiced, recorded and played a couple gigs with it since and I haven't had any problems.
