Topic: Really need the forum's help

I'm in a position where I really need your thoughts and advice on this.  I have an American Std Strat autographed by Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, and Joe.  I promised myself I would NEVER sell anything autographed by Joe.  Here's the situation:  my nephew has verey severe curvature of the spine, along with marphan syndrom.  He's in so much constant pain, and there's only one surgeon in the country (in NY) willing to attempt the surgery.  On top of this, his parents just found out their daughter has Lupus.  In my small way of helping, I wondered what your thoughts might be I could possibly sell this guitar so I could contribute something towards his surgery and how to go about it.  Insurance is supposedly about $92,000 shy....but it's his only hope, and it's just a thought I had where I could possibly help in some way.  Please understand....I'm not using this forum to sell this....I value the opinions here and would appreciate your advice/thoughts.

Re: Really need the forum's help

I donated a 70's strat to silent auction to help raise money for a friends Kidney transplant. There are not easy answers. If you feel it will help it might be the right thing to do.

No brainer, sell the guitar.

Re: Really need the forum's help

Material possessions cannot compare to helping family members. I would do anything required to help my nephew in that situation. The feeling you will get from helping far outweighs owning a signed item IMO. Good luck & hope all goes well with your niece & nephew.

Re: Really need the forum's help

yep sell the guitar, - no doubt, if there is such a thing as fate or karma then the collection of these signatures was for this great purpose. I wonder if Joe's management team could help with the promotion of any auction should you decide to sell?

Agree with this. Family should indeed come first. I'm sure that we all hope for the best possible outcome for your  nephew and niece.

Re: Really need the forum's help

Dont sell the guitar unless you can use it as one of many donations (I cant find the right word) towards the goal of reaching the money for the surgery.....I've seen all sorts of creative ways people go about raising funds for the childs needs.....contact all the TV stations....look for any agencies that will help with funds ( google everything you can think of).....talk to the hospital with your concerns, they have resources of organizations, they will do the work for you.....if you have a mouth that wont quit, use the gift of gab.....heck, if you play in a band (you have plenty of fiddles from what I'm seing on here) fund raisers through music would be one way.....lastly, get a hold of evreyone you know in the music business and brainstorm ways to raise the funds .....I'm repeating myself, cant think right this moment....bottom line is leave no stone unturned, you can find a way....never ever give up, not an option....I'm the coordinator in our post office for the national food drive, we help feed the hungry...give and you shall receive....If it were me, I'd bend everyones ear.....no time to be shy, nervous, or anything to stop you....hey just MY opinion

Good luck, God Bless

Re: Really need the forum's help

Perhaps there may be a forum member who would be willing to purchase the guitar from you and give you the right to buy it back for the purchase price if you are ever in a financial position to do so

Love the States and would spend more time there if it was ever possible but it'stimes like this when the UK has more than we give credit for with the NHS. A horrible place to be but I think your heart knew the answer even before you put the topic up for discussion. My heart goes out to you and the family.

Come on the Blades (sorry Idolbone just had to borrow your line)

Re: Really need the forum's help

A few years ago one of my coworkers was diagnosed with breast cancer.  A few coworkers got together and next thing you know they had raised over $30,000 for her (took about two months to put together).  They had a dinner with donated raffle items (sports stuff is huge and many teams are very willing to help with legitimate fund raisers) and donated food.  A group of people made a special breast cancer bracelet that sold very well and made a lot of money.  Local entertainers donated their talents. A similar effort was launched for a coworker whose child had bone cancer and they raised even more money.  As Shred pointed out there are lots of avenues to explore.  People can be very generous even in tough times, and I  am willing to bet that a lot of people out there would rather donate to a local cause where they know what the money is being used for rather than a large organization.  That is how my charitable money rolls.

In your comment you said "I would never sell anything autographed by Joe."  This is a special case, and it sounds like in your heart you really want to do this.  Joe would almost certainly be glad he was helping (indirectly) a worthy cause.  Whatever you decide to do please keep us informed and let us know if there is anything we can do to help.
