Topic: Good alternatives to the EV12L....?

Hey guys, was looking to put together a new speaker cabinet and wanted to use EV12L's but 1. They're too expensive and 2. They're practically impossible to get in Australia..... Was wondering if any other companies make a similar speaker or a clone at a reasonable price??

Cheers Stefan smile

Cheers Mate!! Will check them out smile

Re: Good alternatives to the EV12L....?

Good luck. The Scholz Classic is another great EV-like speaker, but runs about $250 USD

Cat believe the Eminence can handle 400w, that's crazily resilient!! Thanks will have a look smile

Re: Good alternatives to the EV12L....?

Just as an additional question. If the speaker handles 400W and the amp is 20W, then is it likely that it wouldn't drive the speaker enough to get a good tone?

Re: Good alternatives to the EV12L....?

Thats the whole point ..no coloration from the amp ..I use Fatal PR300's (300w each) but mostly because they're Neo's and therefore very light ..they don't have the top end of the Delta Pro or EVM but thats usually the first part of the spectrum I'm drop anyway ..NB. I'm not recomending the Faital's, they simply work for me as a compromise as I can't lift a cab with EVM's these days.

In my experience high output full range drivers make a great amp sound amazing (eg. my Trainwreck clone) and some other amp's sound poor / dead (I had a JetCity 20w head that despite the good reviews lasted two days with me).

Re: Good alternatives to the EV12L....?

Weber Michigan's are supposed to be close too.  Not sure on price.......

Re: Good alternatives to the EV12L....?

Excuse me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that if you had a speaker that was double the wattage of the amp it wouldn't drive the speaker anyway.  Am I wrong?

Re: Good alternatives to the EV12L....?

I'm probably wrong, I really have no idea of amp and speaker dynamics, AD3 you're probably right however.

Re: Good alternatives to the EV12L....?

You won't blow a high-wattsge speaker like the ones mentioned above. Unless you are wanting a speaker that adds it's own color to the sound of your amp (i.e. Celestion, Jenson, Scumback, etc.) there is not much reason to be concerned with "driving" the speaker.

Joe uses evm12L speakers rated at 300 watts each. 2 speakers per head. Each head 100 watts. With such high wattage head room
the speakers are just reproducing the signal that is sent to them. You don't get speaker deflection/distortion you get the full
reproduction of the tone the amp is delivering.

Aren't they rated at 200w?

Re: Good alternatives to the EV12L....?

Sorry I stand corrected the EV site states they can handle 300w!!

I believe the Zakk Wylde EVM is a 300W speaker. THe 12L is a 200W speaker

Re: Good alternatives to the EV12L....?

I concur with the 200W - says so here... http://www.thomann.de/gb/ev_evm_12l_classic_8_ohm.htm

Now that is an 8ohm speaker and they do a 16ohm too, so which would be the best bet?  I'm guessing it depends on the application and whether you're stringing them together (in which case use the 8ohm).

I am thinking of replacing just one of the Celestions in my Marshall 1936 stereo cab for an EVM12L and I believe the correct choice here would be the 16ohm version.  Correct me if I'm wrong guys!

The reason for this is I am using the cab in stereo with a 55W head into one side, but my DCL100 into the other side.  Clearly, with the 1936 speakers rated at 75W, one side is underpowered and needs an upgrade to ensure clarity.

Re: Good alternatives to the EV12L....?

Incidentally, as Wharris says above I've also heard that the Eminence Delta-12A are a good but cheaper alternative (400w!) - http://www.thomann.de/gb/eminence_delta_12.htm.  Is anyone using these?

Also, what about Fane speakers - been around a long time and I thought they had a good pedigree - cheaper end of the market perhaps - e.g. Fane Sovereign 12-200LT?

If that 55W is a tube amp I'm pretty sure you'll fry the Celestion 75W within a couple of weeks. If you want enough headroom from your speaker, I'd look at another Marshall 2x12 for the DSL.
