Topic: What's your favorite Strat Single Coil?

Hey All... I'm sure this has been asked before but what's your favorite Strat Single Coil and why? I have a Nash Strat with Fralin's in it and they are just not to my taste, thinking I'll try something different. A friend on the forum recommend Suhr FL Standards, which I've heard in a Suhr and sounded great... I have a Lollar Dirty Blonde set in my main Strat that sound amazing.... but what you you dig?

Re: What's your favorite Strat Single Coil?

Slider's Vintage 57's or 59 A3's if your after true vintage tone and aesthetics. No they're not cheap but they'll likely be the last set you'll ever buy. It's rare to see a used set for sale. You can reach Rod (Slider) by email. sliderspickups@bigpond.com

I like Abrigal Ybarra's custom shop Fender 69' set ones.....(she's a legend)

Re: What's your favorite Strat Single Coil?

Plus 1 on the Custom Shop 69' I've tried a lot of pickups in my sunburst strat (I call the guitar Lucky) It was an 2001 american strat.  Those pickups sounded good but didn't have any bass to them, they were just kind of plain.  Then I tried Fender Vintage noiseless.  Those pickups are very quite but to me they don't sound like a strat pickups at all!  I tried Seymour Duncan Duckbuckers and a little 59' in the bridge and it too didn't sound like a strat to me.  Hot rails sounds great but they are not for me either.  Then I tired GFS pickups out and their 64' strat overwound pickups were fantastic!  I loved them.  Late last year I decided I wanted to try a really nice expensive set out so I was thinking Fralins or Custom Shop Fender pickups.  The Fenders I got a good deal on so I went with the CS 69's because I heard those were the most popular next to the Texas Specials.  The pickups really do sound better then my GFS pickups but not to the point I'd say they are worth double the price.  They just have a lot of bass to their sound and clairity.  Every note pops.

My dad got Seymour Duncan SS1's and they sound incredible compaired to the Custom Shop 69' pickups.  Now I need to try Fralins to see how they do compaired to the Custom Shop 69's

Slider's are definitely worth the price. Besides, Rod guarantees them. Yes even for tone! Once you try them you'll understand. Write to Rod and tell him Andy sent you.

The only Fender set I've ever cared for were the early custom shop Cray pickups. And no they're not Fat 50's or Texas Specials as some people think. They're a specially wound set. I think they're now made in Mexico. You can't buy just the set by themselves. You have to find them for sale used.

Re: What's your favorite Strat Single Coil?

Thanks Andy... I'm trading emails with Rod now, did mention your name and he was thankful that you were spreading the word... and thanks for turning me on to these, really look forward to trying them.

Rod is the best. Very detailed oriented as you'll see in his descriptions. A lot of other winders won't divulge as much as Rod does about his product. He's a good guy and best of all, he's 100% honest. I proud to be able to call him my friend. I know you'll be happy with the results! Tell him I said hello please.

My favorite set is Slider's "57 Replique". He wound these with 50's NOS wire he was able to scrounge up. Rod did a lot of research through the years. He's dissected and documented every aspect of the vintage sets he been sent for rewinds. The 57 Repliques are dead nuts on. Both tone and aesthetics. I doubt anyone would be able to differentiate between a original and Rod's "Repliques". They're very expensive. NOS wire is impossible to find and Rods stash is depleted. I believe Rod will now only use what NOS wire he has left for rewinds.

However his regular 57 sets are just as good. Hell everything he winds is good!

My other favorite is Slider's "69" set. He nails the Hendrix tone with these. He'll also make these reverse staggered if your building a JH tribute. Grey bottoms. Perfecto!

Re: What's your favorite Strat Single Coil?

I'm really liking the Lollar 'Dirty Blondes' that I have in my Strat - especially the middle and neck pickups...  Which makes me think I should have gone the normal 'Vintage Blondes' so that I would have gotten a mellower bridge pickup...

Re: What's your favorite Strat Single Coil?

I may be sac religious or committing a sin here but I'm a Dimarzio man! I just dropped a HS-2 wired single coil in my '57RI Strat's bridge spot and now it's a TONE MONSTER. That HS-2 totally brought this guitar to life and I'll vow to drop an HS-2 in any Strat I ever own. Anyone who loves their Strat but hates how thin/weak it sounds when you flip to the bridge pickup, give the HS-2 a look. Best $55 I've ever spent!!

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: What's your favorite Strat Single Coil?

I put a Dimarzio Injector (Paul Gilbert Model) in the bridge of one strat.  It really helps a strat in my opinion when the bridge pick up is a little thicker and noiseless without getting too distorted or mushy.  I like having the noiseless option at one position on my guitar versus having to shift into the in between pick up position between songs.  I have never been satisfied with noiseless pick ups in the neck or middle position however.

Re: What's your favorite Strat Single Coil?

Nothing wrong with Dimarzio.  I just put a couple of Dimarzio's in a strat for an old friend of mine.  Guitar sounded good!

Re: What's your favorite Strat Single Coil?

I really like the Suhr noiseless pickups/ system. But i have used quite a few different pickups over the years.. I really like apache by bare knuckle pickups, Vintage 54s from Shed Pickups who also wind amazing Les Paul PAF aged clones, Seymour antiquities are really good too. Im going to have to check out sliders pickups from what I have read on here.

Re: What's your favorite Strat Single Coil?

My big thing about noiseless pickups is they always seem to sound beefier then the original strats.  Something about that 60 cycle hum adds to the magic to me.
