Topic: Getting Joe's permanent signature on my JB Les Paul

Was looking to get Joe to sign my Epiphone JB Les Paul next time he is in Adelaide (hopefully October), will probably get it signed just below the tailpiece. I was wondering what procedures you would have to undertake making it permanent (clear spraying etc.)?

Re: Getting Joe's permanent signature on my JB Les Paul

Joe uses a permanent marker so it'll stay there. I'd be careful using something to seal it as it could ruin the finish. Besides Joe would likely be happy to sign it again if it needs to be redone.

I was just concerned that the permanent marker would wear off eventually....

Re: Getting Joe's permanent signature on my JB Les Paul

If you do clear it you want to mist over the signature staying 2 feet away.  If you spray heavy it will lift the marker.  You need to mist the guitar several times until you think you've got it completely covered then you can go back and spray a normal coat over it.  Doing this will most like as spider said ruin the finish and the thicker the finish the worse the tone.  I had an Epiphone JB and I can tell you the finish is thick enough without you spraying more.  Why don't you put it on the back of the head stock that way you won't rub the marker off and you won't ruin the resale value.

Yep, that's the ticket.

Same here, go for the back of guitar. I always thought signatures on the front looked tacky, but thats me.

Re: Getting Joe's permanent signature on my JB Les Paul

I've got a Les Paul Studio thats got a AAA maple top in transblack with Joe's name on it and I play it all the time.  Ink is in Silver.  To be honest the finish is coming off of the guitar where it has no binding Sharpie is still there!

I had Joe sign my pick guard. Then I wrapped the original up in tissue and have it stored away. I bought a replacement pick guard off eBay cheap

+1 for back of the headstock!  That's where Joe signed mine with silver pen last year when I was in Adelaide, and it hasn't faded one bit (mainly because it is an area that NEVER gets touched at all).

When I get mine in May at Springfield, MO I'm gonna have Joe do the back of the headstock. smile

I'm going to respectfully disagree with "back of the headstock" - nobody can see it there!

I'm going for the front, below the tailpiece - LOUD AND PROUD brothers! smile

I just figure that's the safest place. Because this guitar is pretty much the only one I gig with. I know that's one area of the guitar I'll probably never touch. smile

Arm isn't going to touch it there below the tail piece. Go for it!

Re: Getting Joe's permanent signature on my JB Les Paul

must add though if you get the front signed please don't make it wall art!  Joe would rather you play the hell out of it and have to resign it 100 times then to sign it once and you never touch it again.

Re: Getting Joe's permanent signature on my JB Les Paul

If you do decide on the back of the headstock, might be a good idea to get a gold paint marker from a craft store or something (in case he only has black and silver) and take it with you. Gold sig on black back will look tight, plus the front is gold so it will look much better than silver will. Yeah nobody will see it on back unless you show them, but you'll know its there.

Re: Getting Joe's permanent signature on my JB Les Paul

2 years ago Joe signed my bonaburst just below the tailpiece.  I play it everyday, and there hasn't been any change.....just looks as good as day 1
