Thanks for posting this wonderful clip with these two amazing talents. To see these 2 guys go at it is a drummer's paradise.  I was a frequent latenighter with Johnny so I remember being blown away by this.  Buddy made alot of appearances on the show and him and Shaughnessy was definitely one of the highlights.  He was just such a Cool Jazz Cat.  He also had some great stories to tell.  Johnny had a fondness for Buddy.  Johnny also liked to play drums.  He would have some action with those pencils.  This made me kind of nostalgic for the Doc Severinsen Orchestra.  Them and Buddy were so special.

Simply amazing! The Tonight Show with Johnny is probably my favorite all-time TV show. So many great highlights, and that is one that I vaguely remember. Buddy Rich was one of those larger-than-life characters that made his appearances so much fun to watch. I still think he may be the best drummer of all time. And Ed Shaughnessy was a phenomenal drummer in his own right. Thanks Paul for posting!

I love Buddy but Tony Royster Jr is still the best drummer of all time IMHO
