Re: Where's Big Jeff Jones?
There is a subset of singer/guitarists in the world that are solo or duo performers and their basic working sound setup is completely different from a "band" sound. their PA is actually a powered set of speakers & a junction box for mics & guitars. They run everything through the PA, directly.
Wow that works real good! Let's add bass & drums and get a real band going. As soon as they try to continue with the same MO, the amateur pile of crap collapses under the weight and they're PO-ed. Well think about it...if you add every color to to mixing palette it comes up brown mud.
Had to chuckle at that FD. Probably good that I'm coming at it now from the other direction. Just started working with a great guitarist/bassist (semi pro) and a bassist (pro). We all have the band experience but are going 'unplugged - kinda'. So the PA will be for vocals.
Christ it is so much easier. It's covers at the mom with new arrangements. Everything is just so flexible. We put 13 numbers together in the first night and the second get together was fine tuning those 13 and adding 4 more.
My aim was to do something where I could actually stand to 'hear' the music and enjoy it. At these volumes I could sing all evening without any strain. Our current motto is 'no drummers'. Not that I don't like 'em or anything, its just when they are involved everything starts heading towards 11. I'm handling the Cajon and assorted percussion and I'm trying to find a track that I can really get the Triangle going on.
Much fun and easier on the hearing.
