Re: 2012 LP Standard

Is that a burnt maple fretboard or is it rosewood?

Not sure if I'm honest...got to say I'm glad they can darken maple fretboards though because I dislike LP's with a light maple fretboard

Re: 2012 LP Standard

Info I got last Friday as I toured Gibson's Memphis facility (this is where they make the hollow body and semi-hollow body electrics) - the tour guide said they were using rosewood on the fretboards. I don't know if they got more in from a different source since the feds absconded with their supplies last year...

Now I didn't see any pallets of rosewood blanks laying about (access to the manufacturing facility is fairly limited; I'm sure insurance dictates this). The sample neck we were shown had an ebony fretboard on it as well.

Could be too that Gibson is funneling their limited supplies of rosewood to the Nashville custom shop and to Memphis for their high end HB and SHB guitars, and is using alternative wood fretboards on Gibson USA guitars.

The last Gibson I purchased was about a year ago (Gibson USA flying V with Floyd Rose hardware) and that has an alternative wood fret board on it. It looks and feels very similar to ebony.

Major Tom to ground control...

Re: 2012 LP Standard

Thanks Johnny, Like to feel what the neck is like with different radius. The coil splitting stuff is cool, but could do without. I'm sure the price will be getting an "up grade" as well. -S

Re: 2012 LP Standard

You're welcome but I wish they just left the push pull knobs out and put it as an optional extra...I'd just prefer standard ones if I'm honest

Re: 2012 LP Standard

3/4ths jimmy page wiring, I think its kind of cool personally but I was disappointed they took the locking 1/4th jack out, I guess it wasn't traditional enough.

Re: 2012 LP Standard

I still don't like weight relief...
The electronics seem a good idea...hope they are top notch.
I notice the Grovers as well..
I just wonder how much this will cost by the time it gets to the uk.
I'd still only buy 2nd hand now.

Amen to that.

Very suspicious of the "New" Weight relief, coil taps? Hmmm... maybe. The bypass to the bridge pup is a decent idea but maybe not on a pull up pot, can't see where thats better than a "Blower" type switch or even a push/push pot.

I'm willing to be that isn't rosewood on that board either, Granadillo probably.

my 97 les paul classic plus is much nicer to play a 4 hour bar gig than my much heavier 72 or 78 les paul custom. Sometimes weight relief is NICE, and a wider strap lol

- Nic from Detroit... posting on JB's Forum since 6-2-2006
Ask me about my handwound Great Lakes Guitar Pickups
Since 2010, Bonamassa fans have taken advantage of my JB friend discount = my cost + shipping. cool

Wide strap - done.
I'll wait till I'm hitting the 50 mark...then I'll be complaining!!

Re: 2012 LP Standard

1st post from me but............

When will Gibson realise asymmetric necks, coil taps, weight relief etc don't make a Les Paul Standard. They make a good option for a new Les Paul but not a Standard. Just call it something else like a Les Paul Modern.

BTW, I'm not in marketing (good job too).

Cheers
