Topic: Music recording software (poll)

1. What audio recording software have you used/enjoyed most?
2. How does it compare to others you have used?
3. Are you using this for scratch tracks, idea jotting, or mastering?

Re: Music recording software (poll)

I have used Audacity and Garageband the most. Audacity for jotting ideas because it's free, quick and easy.
Garageband I'm learing and band has used it for demos.
Our studio engineer is currently mixing our EP using Nuendo, which is an elevated version of cubase or cakewalk... I don't remember.

I wanted to look up more on vocal pitch correction in garageband, but it's hard with all the "auto-tune" T-Payne results I get when I want to look up how to sound "correct" vs. computer auto tuned. hmm

Re: Music recording software (poll)

I use Audacity because I'm cheap.  Yeah I said it!  Not like nobody didn't know already.  LOL

Re: Music recording software (poll)

None of the above! I use Reaper mate, its free to download and I would put it heaps above garageband (Which I have) Ableton (Which Ive used) and Audacity (Which I hate!) with a decent interface unit and some decent monitors you can't go wrong with it in my opinion.

Re: Music recording software (poll)

I used Garageband for ages to create demos etc.  I shelled out and bought Logic and used it for a couple of projects, but still find myself going back to Garageband for quick demos etc. because I am so familiar with it and know where everything is.

I am thinking that I need to spend some dedicated time sitting down and actually LEARNING Logic so that it becomes second nature to me...just have to find the time.

Still, GB can create pretty decent tracks in its own right... Just about all the tracks on my SoundCloud page were done in GB... http://soundcloud.com/cyberferret

personally? I prefer Acoustica Mixcraft. It's easy to use, is layed our perfectly for multitracking, and is pretty cheap as well.

Re: Music recording software (poll)

I use Logic 7.  Been meaning to upgrade to a newer version for years, but just haven't gotten around to it.

Re: Music recording software (poll)

I'm giving the Reaper a try looks good, sound better then Audacity

Been using Acid Pro since it's first incarnation.  Real easy to use - i.e. no need to spend hours learning the interface - just get on and create.  Mainly use it as a sketch pad, but have used it to record full band songs to producing a full CD's worth.  Have also used it to write with other musicians in the US - swapping sound files to produce some neat finished tracks.  Acid Planet is the associated web space where you can submit tracks for peer review which is a pretty cool way to potentially get your music heard around the world.

None of the above.  I've been using RiffWorks Standard since 2007.  There is a free version you can download that can record only four tracks.  The standard version is up to 24 tracks.  The software is easy to use.  You can record originals or work with backing tracks.  I use a Digitech RP250 for an interface between my guitar and PC.

Re: Music recording software (poll)

I have been using Pro Tools for a few years to do demos and work on some album stuff with my bands. I really like it and still learning it BUT its VERY expensive. If I didn't already have so much $$$ invested in it I would go with Reaper or Logic. I have used Cakewalk and Garageband and both are great and easy to use

If you plan on working with a studio ever and want to share tracks Pro Tools is the way to go. If not there are much less expensive choices.

Re: Music recording software (poll)

I've used Logic for a few years now, versions 8 and 9

see no reason to change, as I really like the software as it's intuitive and loaded with features

Re: Music recording software (poll)

Man this thread really depressed me.  I haven't played with other musicians in about 2 years now and after reading this I thought it would be great to get the computer booted up and mess around with recording.  Only thing is I've learned that with backing tracks I can't play worth a darn right now.  Easy stuff I can pull off fine, but I couldn't figure out the rhythm to "Gimme Three Steps" to save my freaking life!  Mind you it sounded great while I was playing it I thought.  Nope play back suggested I'm sloppy and every now and then off time.  I've played for 13 years now and sounded like I've been playing for 13 days.  Excuse me I need to go practice.

Re: Music recording software (poll)

We use Sonar currently.  The results can be heard on my band's site (theliquidkitchen.net).  Most of that stuff is digital gear going into Sonar.  Would I do it any differently if I could with tape, tube compressors, a tube driven board, and whatever other tube whatever you can think of?  you betcha!  alas, on a budget, we do alright.  Some of the newer tunes there have been mic'd live in a room, but I dare people to pick out which tunes are full digital and which are mics and amps recorded to a hard disk.

Re: Music recording software (poll)

I always use Logic.

Re: Music recording software (poll)

Used Cakewalk Sonar for years in my studio.. I now use MOTU Digital Performer which is absolutely great. I have Logic, but it doesn't seem to "logical" to me?

Re: Music recording software (poll)

I ticked Sound Forge as I still use that, but I use it was a wave form editor/mastering software. I wouldn't class it as a DAW.
