He showed his confidence in his defense on Sat. evening when he released Tiquan Underwood to add a defensive lineman for Sunday's game. What had me wonderin' was the suspect non calls on the Pats d-backs. Did the league/refs want the game to be close? Oh well on to baseball season!!!

An astonishing number of times, the athlete/team that appears on an SI cover has some sort of loss or setback the following week. Doesn't mean their whole career is affected, doesn't mean they aren't any good (you pretty much HAVE to be good to make the cover, no?), just that their appearance on the cover often signals a reversal of fortune. An example: A couple of seasons back, KC Royals pitcher Zack Grienke started the season on a long winning streak with an ERA under 1.00, got himself on the cover of SI, and promptly got shelled in his next start, losing his first game of the year (and he wound up going like 8-7 with an ordinary ERA over for the remainder of the season)...

Kind of fun to read about

Eli manning appeared on David Letterman last night and they discussed the Bradshaw TD. Eli told Dave he didn't tell Bradshaw DON'T SCORE!!! till he handed the ball off to him. Apparently Eli saw the NE defense parting like Moses parting the Red Sea as soon as the play started, talk about quick thinking! Still the strangest play I can remember in a Super Bowl.

Sorry Coach, my comment was a bit tongue in cheek. I think that as many people show up on SI's cover, some are bound to have coincidental bad luck. I believe people jump on those instances and it gains momentum. I mentioned Ali & Jordan because they probably have 100 covers combined but never any jinx.

Here's a feel good story that came out of Sundays game. Jona Rechnitz, a NY fan, laid down a $1,000 on a proposition bet in Vegas that the first score of the game would come on a Giants safety. The odds were 50-1 and he collected $50,000. Today he told the media he will donate his winnings to various charities including one that Tom Brady supports and one of Justin Tuck's choice for forcing Brady to throw the illegal pass.

Remember G Dawg, NFL stands for Not For Long. The only guarantee in this deal is the Skins don't get a 1st round pick for years to come. RGIII is a hot commodity, but so have been many a Heisman QB that went high in the draft. What the Skins have done is sold the farm for a chance to roll the dice. It all looks good on paper, but an injury or any other veriable, (Ja'Marcus Russell), is possible. Better your team than mine, I heard yesterday the Browns dangled an offer @ the Rams as well. Hope the Skins have the cap room to build a better team around RGIII, he can't do it alone. C'mon 7, Daddy needs a new ring!

Two posts from some very knowledgeable guys on another forum -

It is finally becoming crystal clear why Peyton was not throwing for teams during initial visits. He has now thrown for Denver, SF, and today the Titans. It is now obvious the first visits to teams was to feel them out and narrow his choices down to a few teams. Then he has gone back to throw for the finalists. Makes sense because at the onset of this process there were around a dozen teams interested in him, so why throw for all of them until he narrowed his choices down to a few finalists.

He says he will announce his new team this coming Monday or Tuesday.


And just like that, Seattle grabs Matt Flynn. $26m over three years. Rumors were he could get $10m a year, so this isn't as high as some predicted. But it's a fair amount. As I suspected some 20 posts ago, a team could be aggressive and grab him while Manning was still on the block. Steve Wyche of NFL.com calls it a good move. We'll see. Seahawks need to find a way to keep TJax as well, but that may be difficult.

If Manning goes to the 49ers, look for a short frenzy to get Alex Smith, lead by the Dolphins and Browns, who have both been out of the loop during free agency. Tough luck for Smith if it happens, and I hope it doesn't for his, and the 49ers sake, as Merckx said. If not, Smith has a very nice 3-year, $24m offer similar to that of Matt Flynn, waiting for him, and he'll sign almost immediately. I'm sure he'd love to stay in SF.

If the Dolphins lose out, look for them to take Ryan Tannehill with their 1st round pick. Seems way too high for me, but they need players, and aren't getting any in free agency. Steeler Ryan Clark tweeted that no one wants to play there because of the GM. But I don't know how true that is. The thing no one notices is that Matt Moore is a decent QB. He's played on a lot of crappy teams and managed to pull through to make them decent, and even made a Pro Bowl. That's not easy at all to do in this league.

With Manning and Flynn gone, talk will soon be on how high Tannehill goes, and shortly after him Weeden and Cousins.

Eagles talking to Plaxico Burrus. Now that's one guy they don't need to sign. I'm not sure they have enough $ left to do so anyway.

The buzz from SF, Alex Smith went to Miami and supposedly was offered a contract to the tune of $8million a year. The telling news is that he didn't jump on a plane home to think it over, instead checked into a local hotel perhaps to announce his signing today??? Manning coming to SF would extend a connection involving Jim Harbaugh. Peyton replaced Harbaugh when he signed with Indy, Then Harbaugh groomed Andrew Luck, who is expected to replace Manning in Indy, so Manning comes to SF to play FOR Harbaugh and throw passes to Randy Moss & Mario Manningham who were signed by SF in the past week. The 9ers have also kept their entire defense intact. SF fans are really holding their breath waiting on Peyton's decision.

Peyton Manning has made his decision, telling his agent, Tom Condon, to open negotiations with ... the Denver Broncos, according to ESPN.

Manning phoned the Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers to tell them of his decision to play for the Broncos, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports. Signing Manning would appear to mean that Denver, according to Mortensen and ESPN’s Adam Schefter, will try to trade Tim Tebow.
