Topic: Grover tuners.

Anyone have any experience replacing Kluson "tulip" style tuners with Grovers? I'm wondering if it can be done without modifying the guitar, which is an 06 Gibson Les Paul Standard.

Re: Grover tuners.

I believe you would need to route fatter holes for the Grovers.

Re: Grover tuners.

Replacing klusons with grovers then usually have to ream to peg holes a little wider for them. Can be done quite simply, but if not comfortable with process best to take to a tech, shouldn't cost much.

Re: Grover tuners.

I pulled a set of Gold Grovers out of an Ibanez acoustic and to my surprise, they fit right in the holes of my LP Traditional. Either way, if they don't fit, just make the holes wider. I like the looks of the grovers, but the particular set of Klusons didn't hold pitch well, so I replaced them. Otherwise, there was absolutely no difference in sound as far as I'm concerned, but I'm sure some "think" they can here something. -Seth

Re: Grover tuners.

Yes you need to drill.  You'll need a 10mm drill bit and a drill press (as well as an extra person there to help you hold the guitar steady)  I had an SG Standard with Gibson tulips on it, not Kluson.  They were the same size as the Grover and worked pefectly.  My buddy I jam with has a 07' Les Paul Standard and its got the Kluson tuners, he bought Grovers thinking "Direct replacement" Afer he saw he was going to have to drill his guitar he sent the Grovers back.  Very worth while mod if you plan on keeping it.  Don't touch it if your going to sale it.

Just to make sure we are all on the same page, I'm referring to Grover Rotomatics.

Re: Grover tuners.

Yes the Grovers theard on the top side of the head stock.  Kluson have a press in ferrule that is around 8.5mm size hole.  Your going to have to drill.
