pretty cool. a few minutes ago the one parent was rolling the egg around and you could see the hole. looks like the other parent is perched on the box thing watching guard, you could see its tail feathers in the upper left of the screen.

Yes, both take turns sitting. The box is on a pole to simulate a nesting site. They naturally nest in caves and holes. They don't make a nest. The captive breeding has been very successful here. They caught all the wild ones and brought them here since they were on the verge of extinction. They've been releasing a few sucessfully lately to repopulate the wild.

We're minus 8 today from UK time, tonight minus 7 as we set clocks for spring. Local sunrise is about 6am today. Still under the parents but a hole is there now. big_smile

Re: Watch it hatch!

Thanks I'm used to the 5 hour delay. Mum doesn't want to move much at present.

Any time now. A peek of beak was seen when the sitter moved the egg. Mom's very restless and paying lots of attention to the egg.

Edit" It just hatched. Baby laying in the shell fragments. Both parents very actively caring for it. cool

Haha, dad on the baby, mom wants a look, he's not having it!
Rick
edit. Both parents very actively caring and moving back and forth. Seems each wants to sit on it. The chick is a gray ball of fluff with a naked head. One more small step back from the brink of extinction.

Re: Watch it hatch!

Read the story about the biologist that took a fertile egg into Mexico because they thought a nesting pair that had been hand reared and  released had an infertile egg. He rappelled down a cliff to the cave in order to swap eggs and found the mama and a baby. She attacked!

My sister has the rarest scar in the world. She was bitten on the wrist by a California Condor here in the zoo when she reached in a huge flight cage for a feather when she was about 8. The condor swooped down and had a bite before she knew what happened. I had to yank her hand back through the wire mesh. My mom called the zoo bird curator asking about the possibility of disease from the bite. The curator was incensed and said he was more worried about what his condor might get from a little girl! lol

This program is a huge success story for our famous zoo and its captive breeding and repopulation efforts.
