Braved the sub-zero temperature on Saturday evening to nip through to Guisborough to catch one of the all-to-infrequent visits by Marcus Bonfanti, to this region; even though he’s one of the hardest working guys on the circuit, in one form or another.

The night kicked off in unusual, but fine form with the Danny Allen Band, a sax-led, local four piece with a more funky/soul sound than usually expected at Guisborough, but a nice change all the same. With Wax Jackets collegue Joe Devereux on bass, Gary kellet on keys and stand-in drummer, the guys started with a smooth instrumental before a set of originals and a good mix of covers including Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison and Dusty Springfield!! and were called back for an encore of Average White Band’s Picking Up The Pieces.

A slightly chilled Marcus took the stage shortly after, claiming that despite being “one man with an acoustic guitar” he was going to be louder than any band: well, AS loud, certainly. As far as the guitar goes, Marcus showed a flawless technique justifying his being one of the most in-demand sidemen on the circuit. And couple that up with the incredible voice he has, for a southerner, coming very close to the N.East baritone we love of the likes of early Coverdale and Chris Rea.

Over 2 sets, Marcus went in and out of his back-catalogue, God Only Knows, Sweet Louise, Devil Girl, What Good Am I To You and Give Me Your Cash from the last album; Diamonds In The Rust, Now I’m Gone (Is Your Life Better), The Girl I Knew from his first album and Honey, Sugar Baby, Run Long, The Bittersweet and Medicine Man from his Medicine Man E.P. There was probably even a couple more in there, the guy was up and running and having a brilliant time, as were the 80 or so in the room.

For the encore, not only did Marcus swap his acoustic for a plugged-in Telecaster, and invited Danny Allen’s rhythm section back on stage for a great run through Freddie King’s Big Legged Woman and was himself surprised when Danny Allen came on stage with alto sax and the 2 had a great duel. If there was a curfew, it was pushed as the 2 then launched into Messin’ With The Kid and pushed the temperature well up.

If someone said that a man with a sax and a man with an acoustic guitar could rock Guisborough as much as that, I wouldn’t have believed him, but I was there, my mate from Sedgefield RnB club was there and so were 2 Mentulls, so believe it.

Through the show, Marcus, in his own fashion, told us that a new Band album was in the can, so watch out for a spring tour; probably after he records the new Saint Jude album, starting this week. Did I say he was an in-demand guy?
