Topic: Sports Head Injuries

As more medical research has shown cumulative and serious brain damage to contact athletes, Kris Diehlman, the Chargers' all pro left guard will probably announce his retirement on the advice of doctors. He sustained a severe concussion and subsequent seizure last October. He is said to have stated, "I'd like to be playing with my kids in 10 years and remember who they are in 20."

Kris was one of the baddest of the bad on the field. Near superhuman strength and an attitude to match. He refused to have his helmet painted during the season, calling the scrapes and scars from combat in the trenches trophies. He was a scary looking  dude up close, akin to a nasty biker in demeanor and looks at first glance. My sister's next door neighbor.

He walks away from a 5.6 million contract this year with much more in store from pending free agency. This should give all athletes pause.

Can't help but agree however boxing enthusiasts will then complain. Rugby is my favourite sport (union of course) and it is dangerous also. Before you know it Big Brother will be banning everything. Rock concerts too loud , damage hearing they would set maximum sound levels. There has to be a limit. People love and volunteer to take part it should be their choice. Now the cost involved is another argument.

I'm not in favour of banning, nor am i a fan of the HSA.
The question is, why are we attracted to watching and taking part in, things that are dangerous to our, and others health? I know the answer, it goes as deep as to our very DNA.

Re: Sports Head Injuries

Good responses. I abhor banning as well. I'm a fan of MMA, boxing, rugby, hockey and other contact sports. Team sports that require helmets may be able to use technology to improve impact reduction. Boxing and MMA? I'd say they are on their own and take their chances at the pro level. Deaths occur all the time in those sports.

Re: Sports Head Injuries

My stomach did a flip when I saw this the other night. Yikes!!

I'm glad there is more awareness and research being done. I know 2 young athletes only in their teens who regularly visit neurologist/concussion specialists. My one friend drives 5 hours one way to go to the concussion specialist in Pittsburgh that developed that baseline test now used in sports and at our high school. He is Sidney Crosby's (Pittsburgh Penguins) doctor.

One of the other Flyers, Chris Pronger, is not coming around well from his last concussion. His wife says he can't put together 2 good days back to back.

Kris did announce his retirement yesterday. This article, though covering the career of one of the greatest players, does touch on the head injury issue briefly. http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/mar … ll-player/

Sorry I don't have articles to share now.But former Chicago Bear Dave Duerson committed suicide not that long ago.He had deep depression issues  that were believed to be associated with head trauma.I don't know if they can ever made a helmet good enough to protect athletes properly. We can only pray.

I believe Duerson's family is now suing the Bears and the NFL. Although I was a fan of Dave Duerson, this seems to fall into the category of not taking responsibility for ones (or ones relatives) own actions. Hockey is trying to regulate play to prevent/minimize concussions, but they still seem to occur way to frequently. Right now the Blackhawks have two of their top players out with concussions (Toews for 6 games and counting, hjarlmarson for 11 games and counting). Trying to ban boxing or hockey would work about as well as prohibition did.

Re: Sports Head Injuries

By chance today, a customer came in who happens to be an ex NFL pro lineman. He said that one of the big problems now in the NFL is the training that leads to hard bodies with little fat. He said that this lack of fat leads to more serious impact and injury. To quote him , he said "NFL now stands for not for long." most players don't last more than 3 years before injury takes them out.

Anybody who comes up with a better helmet will have a market.

I will post something in the football topic later, but football is a violent sport.  This is not hidden and football players know that, as most have been playing since they were kids. The NFL is the elite and they put their bodies on the line to get more money.  They also love playing the game.

It is not a 3 year job. Most players get injuries and recover and continue playing. Some players may not last because of injury, but also some don't last because they get cut because the competition is so fierce.  You have to be the best to stay in the NFL.

I am sorry to hear about your guy. I can remember Stan Humphies being one of the worst I seen hit and given a concussion. I always thought is was good that he retired since he had a number of concussions.
