My '67 and '74 Twin Reverbs are clean machines! I run them in stereo split with a TC Chorus, Deluxe Memory Man, and an EP3 Echoplex.  That's roughly 170w-200w of clean power....yeah baby!

The 85 watts they pump out doesn't make them unusable at bedroom and smaller settings you find? I take it just adds to the headroom without being insanely loud.

A pair or even a single Twin Reverb can be LOUD. I run them both on "3" for a perfect clean sound with absolutely no breakup. You can play any gig or venue with a Twin IMO, hence it's history as one of the most popular backline amps of all time. If you want CLEAN sounds the Twin is king because they stay clean at almost any volume.

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

60's & early 70's Fender amps are very crisp & clean..... & they just keep going & going

And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually.........

Re: What's peoples favourite clean tone amp?

I have owned Twin's and yes they are perhaps the greatest "loud clean amp". But I like a warmer clean sound - I mean "bell-like" but not ear piercing - smoother around the edges. My '69 Fender Super Reverb (original CTS Alnico's) is my all time fav. Think SRV's "Lenny".

Gits: '03 Gibson Historic R7 Goldtop, '06 Gibson R8 Plaintop, MIJ '62 RI Strat,  and others...
Amps: '99 Marshall 1987x Plexi RI, 1969 Fender Super Reverb

Re: What's peoples favourite clean tone amp?

I like Two Rock and virtually all their models sound the same on clean channel until cranked up.  TR have a very thick clean tone, no signs of shrill or twang:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kmJJbIAoDw

Re: What's peoples favourite clean tone amp?

Thanks again guys, going to go try out some Fender Twins and Super Reverbs as well as digging around for any second hand Two Rocks.

Interestingly, just tried the Bogner Goldfinger which had a surprisingly big clean tone, very chimey and tight bass response, was impressed.

Re: What's peoples favourite clean tone amp?

Dr. Z MAZ 38 (my amp).  It's rich, thick and round, clear, not harsh at all, super dynamic and expressive.  Perfect clean tone with both SCs an HBs.  Love it, love it, love it.  I had a 70s Super Reverb for a long time, but I got the Z because it was smaller, lighter and easier to haul around to gigs.  Personally, I ended up liking the Z's tone a lot better than the Super anyways.

Re: What's peoples favourite clean tone amp?

Yeah, I would also suggest the Twin Reverb as an option.  They're great, even at low-er volumes (still pretty loud), but also heavy.  Same thing for Super Reverbs.

But, I've gotta say, I've always loved Hot Rod Deluxes for clean tones, too.  I think they sometimes catch a bad rap, being one of the cheaper Fender options, but I still really like the cleans (drive channel is 'meh', usually).  It depends what exact clean you're looking for, though, as it's different from the blackface/blackface reissue Fenders, but they always seem to have a very warm, tube sound to them--very "spanky" I guess.  The newest III versions have better speakers and I think a better drive (increased bass, or something like that), and can be had around 450-550 used.  The older ones probably 100-150 cheaper.

Re: What's peoples favourite clean tone amp?

I think any of the Fender BF amps would be on the top of the clean list. Including the reissues. My HR Deluxe is good but I don't think one of the best. I was really impressed by the clean sparkle of a Carr Rambler as well.

Yes they are.  Super clean and BRIGHT.  They will shatter a beer mug on the counter...a full beer mug.  If you don't have the right gear you have to turn them up to 9, or put radio shack speakers in em. lol  if you want distortion.  His sound real good in his dining room.

Freddy the King used them.  Better have a roadie.  They're heavy.

Re: What's peoples favourite clean tone amp?

Watch the rig rundown of Eric Johnson's setup and that's pretty much my rig.

Amps: 100w Metro '69-spec Superlead, '74 Marshall 50 1987 lead head, '74 Fender Twin Reverb, '67 Fender Twin Reverb.

Pedals: Ibanez TS808RI, Dunlop Hendrix Fuzzface, Boss DD3, BK Butler Tube Driver, TC SCF Chorus, 2x Maestro EP3 Echoplexs, EH Deluxe Memory Man, Loopmaster A/B and true bypass loopers.

That's the "big rig" that I use at home or for recording. The "medium rig" is the '67 Twin Reverb and '74 Marshall. For small or "bare bones" I could live with just one of the Marshall's or Twins with a few pedals. There are days when a Fuzzface into my 50w Marshall is all I want or need!
