Topic: strings on the Epi JB

Does anyone know what brand and gauge of strings come on the Epi JB model?  I think they might be 10s but I am not sure.

Also, I know Joe uses 11-42s topwrapped.  Are they Ernie Ball?

Thanks!

Re: strings on the Epi JB

I'm sure he uses Ernie Ball 11-52's. I personally use 11-48's from Rotosound (reds) in mine ad they are good. I especially like the free top e string in every pack.

They come with 10-46, I replaced them with Dean Markley 11-52's and saw a massive difference, I had to settle with Gibson brand 11-50's the other day as my local store didn't have any 11-52 gauge strings and it still sounds good with a 50 on it. The Gibson strings sound really good... I wonder who makes them?

Re: strings on the Epi JB

I think I saw it somewhere that the JBLP comes with 10-46. But to me they felt like the same realy cheezey ones that come on all Epi's right down to the cheapest one they produce. But thats not a complaint. This is prety much the norm for any MIC guitar in that price range. I didnt even bother plugging in my JBLP when it arrived until I put new strings on it anyway.

My first set I happend to have at home was EB Hybrids. I love those on my strat, but I didnt care for them at all on the LP. I picked up a bunch of the EB Slinky 10-46. These feel and sound far better than the Hybrids did. More piano like. Next time I get to a music store I want to pick up some EB Power Slinky 11-48 to try out.  I havent had 11's on anything for a while. But i also havent had a guitar like the JBLP for a while either.

On all my other guitars, going to heavier strings didnt make much of a tonal difference. It just made bending harder...lol...so I stuck with mostly 9's and 10's. But this JBLP is so percusive with the beefy neck and BB 2&3 pups going from the hybrids to slightly heavier 10's made a very noticable improvement.

Where do you find these? Im not at all familiar with that name. With Daddy's Junky closed, its created a music store vacuum, so Im finding myself getting by with Portsmouth BestBuy(not much of a music store, but they have strings...lol) or internet shops.

Re: strings on the Epi JB

Get mine online from Reidys in Blackburn.

Re: strings on the Epi JB

The strings that are on it now don't seem too bad.  They feel like 10's.  I ordered the Ernie Ball Power Slinky 11-48.  They should be here soon.  I have NEVER used 11's, but I think it's almost called for on the JB model.  I have 10s top-wrapped on my other Les Paul so it feels like 10s to me.  But I guess in all honesty, I wont be able to tell the difference.  But I am going to try them.

I've always been Ernie Ball string fan.  I've tried others, but I always go back to Ernie Ball.  10's on the strats and soon to be 11's on the JB.

Re: strings on the Epi JB

I hadn't tried them either. When I did I sure did notice the feel and the extra effort that is required. You soon get used to them though and it's then that you appreciate the difference.

Re: strings on the Epi JB

For a Les Paul, Go for the Ernie Ball Not Even Slinkys and top wrap them. The tension will feel like 11s. It makes the 12-56 feel like 11-54 which is Joe's custom gauge. but if you want a lighter low end, go for either the Beefy Slinkys or the Power Slinkys. I love the heavy Ernie Ball strings and they always go on my guitars. I play blues and on my Strat I use 11-48, on my SG I use 11-54, on my Epiphone Casino, I use 12-56, and on my Fender Jazzmaster I use 13-52.

Thanks for the info. Ill check into them.

I did try a set of EB Beefy Slinky 11-54's yesterday. I did a new set up for the heavier gauge...nice comfortable action, intonation spot on, and all I can say is ..YUCK....lol. It was like taking litterly 10 steps backwards on the tone meter. I didnt change any settings on my amp but with these strings its sounds like I set the entire tone stack to 1 and rolled guitar tones all back too. The neck pup turned into mud. The only way I can describe it, is that it sounds like the strings are 4 inches off the pickups.

Ill change back to 10-46 and see if the tone that I was lovin' before comes back to me.
