Since this is specifically music related, I think Other Artists is a better place for it.

Dude you hit the nail on the head! Whenever I'm out @ a bar takin' in live music I've never seen people storm the dance floor faster than when this song is played even though it's not the most danceable tune it gets people rockin'. Let's see what meager efforts can try to compare. I'd be happy to respond to further comments, but Bruno Mars is killin' it on the Grammy's @ the moment.

Our local cover band do a great cover of Mississippi Queen that always gets everyone going, even if the majority of the audience have no idea who Mountain are.

Don't know if there's a favourite that I like to hear; I like a band to surprise me and do a "left-field" cover.
If you want to turn the topic round a bit, the song I get tired of hearing bands do is Voodoo Chile (slight return or not). Two or three bands really do it justice, and take it places; (you know who you are.....) but most just noodle about and that's when I hit the bar or the loo (or both if they really start stretching it).

I hear you Mike, Red House is another song that's gotten beat up here for over-cover-age.

Red House - if someone starts playing it im off. Voodoo Chile does get the lame treatment lots. We used to get a lot of stick having on our setlist, until it was played that is. It is off the setlist now, hard to let go, old friends and all that.
We once headlined a day of young bands in Maryport, as we were setting up, someone tapped me on the shoulder and said 'if I hear one more version of Sex Is On Fire, I will walk on stage and shoot myself" . Apparentley all 5 bands had played it!
Covers are fine, but it is how you do them.
Chantel likes a cover and I think she still does Red House, so Martin will be off for a slash when she does that one - I like her Red House cover, but prefer her cover of Help Me - most artists still seem to like doing the Hendrix covers, but there are so many great songs out there to cover, the choice is endless..................and I loved Virgils encore cover of Johnny B Goode, Hendrix in the West style.......awesome!!!!

How you do them is right. Last night Maroon 5 took a stab @ the Beach Boys Surfer Girl @ the Grammy's and stabbed & stabbed till they butchered it, never once hitting any harmony.

+1 on Red House.
A friend's band has been playing Can't Get Enough of Your Love for decades - YUK! It's when I take my bathroom break.
On the other hand, a band my nephew was in did a rousing rendition of Whippin' Post. Can't really dance to it but EVERYBODY would sing along to that chorus. Good stuff.
We always did a trio of ZZ Top tunes in a row. Finishing it off with Beer Drinkers. One of my personal favorites to play live. And I do like hearing that one from other bands, but I've heard some not so stellar, high speed takes on it as well.. -Seth
and I loved Virgils encore cover of Johnny B Goode, Hendrix in the West style.......awesome!!!!
Wow, wish I'd been there for that. Must have been awesome as I'm sure Virgil would do it full justice.
Got to be Going Down for me. I've seen so many artists and bands playing this fantastic cover and it gets to me every time. So much energy in that song.

Last time I heard Virgil & Co do this, I felt sorry for the people on the floor trying to dance to it - Virgil attacked it like his hair was on fire....
Another one that gets my goat is bands trying to cover Smoke On the Water, not because it's probably the 2nd most popular riff but because nobody seems to get the Hi-hat part right...Sheesh...I mean, Paicey is the only fully serving member of Purple, give the guy respect...

If it is a band do a mixture of covers as opposed to a straight tribute thing then you want to be entertained.
A good version of Mustang Sally always gets my feet kinda shuffling, and if all the musicians know and the singer can sing it then 'Sympathy for the devil', both have got that audience participation element.
Red House and Hey Joe I have heard just too much and I am as guilty as I've ended up doing it too often. I like it if a band starts to play something like 'Badge' for instance as it shows they have a bit of depth to them as there is quite a bit you can do with the song.
And if you are going to cover 'Sweet Home Alabama' then couple it with 'Simple Man' and at least let the people get a feel for what LS are about.
Hellrzr is right about ZZTop and our trio was always 'Tush', 'La Grange' and a Joe influenced 'Just got Paid', but we changed it to 'I thank you', Cheap Sunglasses' and my personal favourite 'Fool for your Stockings' - I just love that song. The intro is just the dogs................
One of my favourite covers is Ian Parker's solo acoustic cover of U2's 'With or without you'. Didn't think someone could take such a song and somehow infuse it with so much more emotion than the original. A beuatiful thing indeed.
Red House - if someone starts playing it im off.
that's the first one I thought of too, always a crowd pleaser, hard to butcher. I even saw Candlebox play it live as an encore, Peter Klett killed. Could somebody turn on some freakin lights?
