Topic: Pedals

There are a couple types I'm looking for.

I'm looking for a good overdrive pedal but there are too many freakin' options. I'm leaning towards an Ibanez TS808 but I also like the MXR Custom OD and the Fulltone PlimSoul. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Also, I need a good delay pedal. I love the sound of analog delays. A friend of mine recommended the BBE Two-Timer and it seems very versatile. Any suggestions?

Re: Pedals

I personally always prefer the ts808 over any overdrive. I have a couple of them. Warm and they sound good. The Fulldrive 2 sounds pretty much identical. Either is a GOOD choice.

The MXR Custom badass 78 is harsher, but the "Modified Badass (M77)" sounds closer to an 808. Otherwise I wouldn't spend too much time splitting hairs over endless versions of the same thing.

I've tried to BBE two timer before. Was alright, but I prefer the carbon copy over it. Has a nice dark sound, but might be too dark for some people. The Aqua Puss has a little more shimmer to it.

Re: Pedals

Thanks guys. What about the Rothwell Hellbender? It's supposed to be a legit Marshall in a box.

Re: Pedals

I own a PlimSoul, and it has certainly lived up to its press clippings. A true bargain, considering its versatility.  I also have a Way Huge Green Rhino, and to my ears it is an improvement over the TS-808 and its imitators...

My delays are a Wampler Faux Tape Echo (basically their Analog Echo pedal with a modulation function) and a Keeley-modified Boss DD-3...

All of the above are reasonably priced. I know guys who've spent more on a single pedal than I spent on those four combined, and don't sound one whit better...

Re: Pedals

My friend runs his Les Paul into a Plimsoul and into a Deluxe Reverb and his tone is incredible. I actually just found a good dal on a Hellbender and I'm gonna go for that. Delay-wise, Im thinking about pulling the trigger on a Carbon Copy. I like the dark tone and it really compliments my Strat and Jazzmaster.

Re: Pedals

For what its worth, I was at (my) guitar center today and the carbon copy was on sale $129 because of president's day. A lot of od pedals were all marked down too. Just throwing it out there if you're close to one and looking to buy new.

depending on which type of marshall you want the box of rock is my fav. I find it stacks pedals like no other I've tried. I had a hellbender for a while but found it too bright. I a/b'd it with the box of rock and it wins hands down. Turns the clean channel of my jubilee into a vintage marshall. Stick a fuzz in front and it's awesome. Forward to the end of the video and you can hear me play castles made of sand. Thats the box of rock into the jubilee with a strat.

Re: Pedals

Pedals that stack well are a plus, good point. I recently started doing such in my "open mic" rig which consists of a Class 5 amp. Since we all like to play loud and never think we're as loud as we actually are, I stack a few pedals for a little more girth in case I'm told I need to back the volume down. Not that I'm the first to discover this, but it also does add more to tweak and mess with when we are constantly striving for a better tone. My ts808 in front of the class 5 is great in my opinion, but if I'm told its way too loud, I have some insurance built in my small slide out pedal tray in the form of other drive pedals.

jo2011: Are you primarily looking to drive a cleaner set amp for more of an actual tone? Or using as a boost for solos? Reason I ask is some of the "marshall in a box" pedals are more on the end of a distortion pedal, not overdrive.

I would use it as my main overdrive tone. But I would have it at a lower gain setting. I'm trying to go for that JTM45 bluesy tone. Then I'll use the 25db mid boost in my Strat for solos

Re: Pedals

Over the years, I can't count how many I have owned. I probably have 8 or 9 now. I do love the Tube Screamer, but I have 2 that when it is all said and done I love the most

Fulltone Mosfet - my favorite

If you want the JTM45 sound look no further than the box of rock, thats exactly what it aims to do. I adore this pedal. With humbuckers and the gain all the way up it really sings and cleans up a treat with the guitars volume knob. I leave it on all the time with the knobs set at noon with the boost function off. This would be perfect for the class 5 as it has not effects loop meaning you can place delay and reverb after the loop.

Here's the box of rock with my fulltone fulldrive stacked - delay and reverb after the box of rock feeding in a clean marshall.

From 4.20 to 5.00 that is just the box of rock and the fulltone supatrem. Digging in will give more dirt.

I'm a Green Rhino fan.

I'm a big fan of overdrive/distortion pedals and have 4 on my board. For delay I use the MXR Carbon Copy. Beautiful analogue sounds.

My favourite overdrive pedal?.......... No question....... Fulltone OCD (running on 18V). See my board at http://toon.smugmug.com/Music/My-music- … 723-X3.jpg

Re: Pedals

I use a combination of the natural overdrive channel on my Fender Blues Deville and/or Fulltone Fulldrive 2 mosfet and/or Tubescreamer (mod-ed version from USA with bypass, upgrade compenents etc).  I bought the Fulltone new in Guitar Centre in LA when I was visiting 6 years back - the moment I played through it at the store for the first time I knew it was 'the' OD pedal I had always been looking for.  I have the Tubescreamer set a little darker than the Fulltone - they compliment each other well.

Gibson LP '89 Custom * Gibson LP '04 Classic * Gibson JB LP Studio * Fender 50th Ann. Deluxe Strat * Gibson Explorer Pro * Epiphone Korina SG * Michael Kelly Patriot Premium * Ibanez 105NT Artcore Custom * Takamine acoustics * Fender Blues Deville 4x10" * Marshall DSL100 and DSL50 * Marshall 1960A * Laney LH55 * Bugera V55HD * Bugera 212VT * Marshall 1912 * Roland Cube 60

Re: Pedals

Thanks guys! The Hellbender is out of the picture for me. But I still like the TS808 and I'm gonna go for that. And for Delay, I'm definitely going with a Carbon Copy. I already have a Hardwire TR-7 and a Crybaby Wah and I think all these pedals will sound awesome together.

Re: Pedals

Excellent choices. If you're running an amp with a good bit of distortion, but not super loud, you can dial back the overdrive and level knobs on your 808 and it will kinda mellow out your amp and you can leave it on all the time.

Re: Pedals

the Blackstar HT-Dual is a great pedal for two different boosts and drives. In my set up I have four vaiables of lead sound 1.Blackstar CH1 Boost 2. Blackstar CH2 boost 3. Tubescreamer 4. Big Muff + boost.

all four are great sounds and the blackstar makes my rig really versatile.
